An update from CD Blog! Photo of refitted Jianghu-I to Coast Guard #1002. Looks like they removed all weapon systems and re-fitted the ship with MG's and some kind of smaller caliber gun in the front. It's covered so I can't seen it clearly.

Never heard of China's Coast Guard?

Man, let me remind you one simple thing:

for all the air photoes of PLAN's new built warships (including the recent 054A photoes) around ShangHai area, it's taken by a famous chinese forumer who serves in China's Coast Guard in ShangHai's flying squad. Of course, his real job is to take photo evidences of vessels committing illegal activities like, spilling oil etc...

So, let's hope the China Coast Guard keep a good relationship with PLAN, otherwise we may not be able to see nice air shots.:)

This really is a great idea on stretching the dollar and reusing an aging ship for other duties. However, wouldn't it have been useful to have left at least the front main gun?

Well Coast Guard is not really for war fighting, its more like policing the coastline so therefore you don't want to blow anyone out of the water. So smaller weapons will be adequate for the job.
About stretching the dollar, wouldn't an aging hull effect the ships seaworthness?

A small cannon will do wonders in getting suspected smugglers or captains not cooperating to cooperate.

About older hulls: they can still be very seaworthy, but that depends on the state of the hull, quality of workmanship, maintenance, and design.

True, you don't need 100mm cannon but I can't tell what they installed on the front in that pic. I would hope it's a cannon at least.

I would expect the weapon will be somewhere near or slightly more powerful than a 50. cal gun. Anything smaller won't be intimidating enough or have the range and firepower to criminal boats.

Probably bigger than a 20mm and smaller than a 76mm. Maybe a 25-30mm or 57mm cannon would be my guess, or something along those lines. But that's just a guess.

That would make sense and I hope that be the case. Anything along the lines of a machine gun would seem pretty weak. While for the most part, I'm sure the CG will be used for day to day affairs such as rounding up criminal boats, I'm sure it may also be used in territorial issues like the gas fields or the Diaoyutai Islands.
