Jianghu FFG transferred to Coast Guard?

I read on china-defense.blogspot this week that 2 Jianghu class FFG's were recently handed over to the Coast Guard.

Does anyone know which Jianghu FFG's (#) were transferred?

And, does anyone have specs for the supposed 1,500 ton Haixun-class Cutter in service with the Chinese Coast Guard?

What are the size & ships of their CG anyway? If this report is true, it means that the PLAN is assuming less coastal patrol missions and will be transferring more older small ships to reserve & the CG. The Soviets did the same on occasiaon- their CG was called "Seagoingunits of the Border Guards"

If it is true, then IMHO it is a response to Japan's large patrol boat that constantly floating about the Diaoyu island. If I remember correctly, Japan just had a 1000ton patrol boat deployed by their coast guard. Janghu is about 1500 ton standard and 1900~ full load. If they take out all the missiles, it will become lighter. Just don't know if they will keep the guns, the Russians would sometimes bombard Japanese fishing boats with their cannons. They would be a major threat to the Japan's coast guard.

On other boards people claim that it's ship #509 and 510 being transferred.

There's about a dozen old Jianghu-I's in service, most are in the East Sea Fleet. It'd be great if they can replace them with 054's and retire the old Jianghu's to Coast Guard service.

The most cost-effective method is to simply strip the SY-1 SSM's and hand them over. But I'd like to see some $$ spent to retrofit them. Perhaps remove aft/stern weapons to install light helicopter facilities, or use the SSM space for more/bigger boat crane (smaller boats for boarding).

As a coast guard or EEZ patrol ship, it doesn't need to be heavily armed. The SSM's, torpedos, etc. can be removed. A main gun plus CIWS for self-defense is prolly sufficient.

Interesting. If confirmed, I hope this means China is able to replace these old ships directly (rather than just downgrade their duties because they can't do anything else).

With few exceptions, the Coast Guard's job is marine police and EEZ patrol, not combat. You can't really compare the marine police to the navy. For example see this article on type of mission being trained for:

It's a part of the armed police force. Every coastal province has 1 to 3 coast guard squadrons under the command of this province's border defence unit. Fujian and Guangdong each has 3; 2 for Liaoning, Shandong, Zhejiang, Hainan and Guangxi; Hebei, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Shanghai has 1 each. The main types of boats are type 218 patrol boat, 130 ton, a twin 14.5 mm machine gun; and a kind of high speed small boat with no fixed weapon. The largest boat is No. 1001, about 1000 ton, only one. So this change of 053 is a great move.

Hello Szbd,

Have you considered editing the Wikipedia entry for PRC Coast Guard? It's linking directly to PLAN right now and could use a good edit. ^_^
