No doubt JF17 is optimised with easy access to key components

This allows for plug and play type missions

Very good for maintainence and upgrade

That is a great force multiplier for any air force to have. Thunders having AESA, gives Pakistan Air Force the impetus needed to attain Air Dominance over its own air space, during war. And when due attention is given to acquiring proper, robust Air Defense System, with high altitude, medium altitude SAMs. The combination would prove appropriate enough for Pakistan to successfully defend it's air space and deny the enemy any advantage.

so in summary older fighters who have mechanically scanned radars can't replace with ASEA due to liquid cooling requirement due to heat release

air cooled ASEA solves this problem, giving airforces the ability to swap out old radars for new ASEA with the hassle mainly JF17 Thunder

ASEA can also track ground moving targets and ensure precision strike

LKF601E should be good for B1 and B2 to be equipped with ASEA

While B3 gets KLJ-7A ASEA

overall good move

I think spreading upgrades over a extended period of time will allow economic viability. Upgrade of Blk I aircraft may not occur till first factory overhaul, same goes true for Blk II.

Let's see if any customer orders a Blk III, it may help bridge financing issues.

The talk about Iranian interest in JF 17 at IDEAS 2018 is also interesting. If such sales goes through, it is likely to be handled by AVIC on the Myanmar model. Iran may alternatively like an assembly line if it can help circumvent US sanctions.

Regards

Wasn't Iran at one point very serious about J-10s? Or was that Bangladesh?

Thunder Block-lll shows a lot of promise for Pakistan Air Force, as well as future sales of the aircraft. Let's wait and see what becomes of Block-llls, I for one am anxious to see the Block-llls finally realized. The only aspect of the Block-lll which am uncertain about is the engines. I hope they come up with an engine which is more powerful, greater endurance, and has more life between overhauls.

When is Blk III production likely to start?

Iranian government has previously shown interest in Su 30SM and J 10. No further progress is known at both ends.

Ah yes, now I remember ... there were reports stating Iran's interest in the Su-35 Flanker-Es. In fact, if my memory serves me right, the Iranian government was supposedly in talks with the Russian Federation about the procurement of Su-35 Flanker-Es, as well as an agreement on the license production of this aircraft in Iran. Mind you, these reports date prior to Trump pulling America out of the JCPOA deal with Iran. There isn't any indication whether this would in any way affect Iran's ability to purchase Su-35 Flanker-Es and setting up a production line on home soil, for the aircraft.

The way I see it, Iran has the economic clout to pull it off. Provided Iran has access to the international market for Oil & Gas trade. One can see why there is fluctuation on Oil prices for the past few years. Coupled with the economic sanctions on the Republic of Iran, Russian Federation and the trade war against the People's Republic of China. It's possible that such tact is intended to undermine the three countries ability to grow economically and as a consequence, modernize their militaries. But there is a possibility that Iran, Russia and China will be able to negate the U.S trade-war/sanctions.

JF-17 Thunder Block-lll's development is taking longer due to the fact that india has chosen Dassault Rafale, and more importantly, revived the MMRCA procurement program that has been dragging on for the past decade or two. Block-lll is understandably a major upgrade variant which would see the introduction of various new capabilities such as AESA, IRST & HMCS. Possibly even new engines, increased payload and who knows something else. Given the importance of the JF-17 Thunder program to Pakistan, the Block-llls won't be rushed. It may take slightly longer, but it's better to get it right and ready, rather than having to move on "Plan-B!"
