Long-term tie-in with Russia via defense systems can not be good for Pakistan's recently independent foreign policy choices. There is already a sense of unease among Pakistan's close friends because of certain foreign policy choices.
One can trace this convergence to JF-17's use of RD-93 and Putin's decision to allow its re-export to Pakistan.
Already there is also talk of SU-35 being a point of discussion between Pakistan & Russia.
Just as Pakistan was a conduit for establishment of Sino- US relations, China has normalized relations between former adversaries.

Hi,
It is not the 'performance' issue----it is the reliability of the RD93 for now.
I think it's because of the upcoming rd33/93 variant, PAF decided to remain stick with it which has increased thrust and more importantly its rumoured to be smokefree. Moreover with every increasing jf17 number the cost of conversion is getting high and it will not be feasible to convert to a new engine at this stage.
