JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread

Reading all the newsbits about potential sales of jf17 - it seems more and more the initial agreement when developing jf17 was that Pakistani side holds most rights to the project. That would imply they paid for all or most of the development expenses. Catic website does list fc-1, so i would guess chinese firm does have some right to it, but perhaps still less than half. Initially there was also talk most of avionics for pakistani planes would not be chinese. As we found out, that's not the case now, and perhaps that made chinese side piece of the cake larger, in a case of a potential sale.

Still, so far it seems to be really Pakistani idea - "lets make a plane", contracted to someone else who could actually develop a design - Chengdu - with various subsystems decided upon as they went along.

It would really explain why the chinese side isn't really being heard at all when it comes to potential sales.

I think the main reason about why most potential customers actually approached Pakistan instead of China was because, they would rather have a view of the aircraft from someone who actually operate the aircraft. China although did most of the designing, but didn't actually introduce this bird into their airforce and so not actually flown and operate them as much as the pakistani who made this bird one of their primary fighters.

Nigeria to buy Russian fighter jets

Nigeria has reached a deal with Russian authorities as Western nations refuse to sell the country much needed weapons.
World Bulletin/News Desk

Nigeria will buy arms from Russia to compensate for western nations' refusal to sell the African country much-needed weapons.

"Nigeria has officially reached an arms deal with Russian authorities," a senior military officer told The Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media on the subject.

According to the officer, a high-level Nigerian delegation led by the air force chief and national security adviser travelled to Russia last week to negotiate the deal.

"Our team returned to Nigeria on Thursday after a four-day trip," he said.

"Russia has now agreed to supply us with arms," asserted the officer. "Henceforth, we are hopeful of getting arms from Russia."

Nigeria is battling a five-year insurgency by the Boko Haram militant group in the country's northeastern region, where more than 13,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed and the local economy brought to its knees.

An emboldened Boko Haram recently stepped up its deadly attacks and seized several areas across Adamawa, Borno and Yobe – the three states worst hit by the insurgency – declaring them part of a self-styled "Islamic caliphate."

There have been complaints that Nigerian troops are using "obsolete" arms while insurgents employ sophisticated weapons.

The Nigerian military is reportedly seeking fighter jets and modern arms to tilt the balance in its favor.

"Basically, what we are buying from Russia are fighter jets," said the army officer.

"Light arms, especially guns of varying powers, can be procured from the black market; but you cannot buy fighter jets from the black market," he explained.

"A war can last many years, if not decades, if both sides rely solely on light arms, which you can get from the black market. In modern warfare, you need air power to establish superiority," said the officer.

Nigerian defense spokesman Chris Olukolade did not respond to AA's requests for comment.

Boko Haram, which first emerged in the early 2000s preaching against government misrule and corruption, became violent after the death of its leader in 2009 while in police custody.

The notorious group has been officially outlawed in Nigeria, Turkey and the United States.

Old allies

Nigeria turned to Russia after failing for months to convince western countries, especially the U.S., to supply it with arms.

"We had to turn to Russia for arms since the U.S. refuses to sell us arms anymore," the senior military officer told AA.

"No country will be allowed to hold us for ransom," he said.

In a recent interview with AA, Nigerian presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said his country was ready to seal a counterinsurgency cooperation deal with any country willing to help its battle against Boko Haram.

It is not the first time Russia and Nigeria have had a defense arrangement.

The now-defunct Soviet Union had supplied arms to Nigeria during the country's 30-month civil war with renegade Biafra soldiers.

Most western nations sat on the fence during the conflict.

The U.S. a few days ago announced it was discontinuing training for the Nigerian military, a decision Washington said had come at Nigeria's request.

The U.S. described the Nigerian decision as "regrettable."

Nigeria-U.S. relations have foundered recently following American criticisms of Nigeria's handling of the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency.

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria James Entwistle exacerbated the problem three months ago when he publicly said his country would not sell arms to Nigeria due to fears of human rights abuses by the country's security agencies.

Tempers flared again in November when a top Nigerian envoy to the U.S. brazenly accused Washington of sabotaging Nigeria's counterinsurgency efforts by refusing to sell it much-needed arms.

So is Nigeria going to purchase JF-17s from Pakistan or an unknown aircraft from the Russian Federation?

We all know that journalists like to invent stories, therefore let's be patient and truth will reveal itself :D

But, IMHO, I don't think Nigeria would want (and afford) to buy two different fighter jet types at the same time . They could order ground attack aircraft like Su-25 and then some JF-17 , but again even this is not very likely . I suspect this will be the clash between JF-17 and Mig-29 SMT . JF-17 (Block 2 )is said to be priced at $25 million , and Mig-29 SMT was around $40 million for Yemen , therefore JF-17 would have slight advantage. But if Russia offers soft loan and slight discount advantage will go to their side .

Best case scenario is that Pakistan Air Force - Naval Support Group would get the third squadron. Given the fact that it would have IFR capability, it would allow for extended combat air patrols of the maritime. However, having said that, it must be known whether the third squadron would have engines and air-frame treatment for corrosion due to operations at sea. The second best scenario is where the "Haiders" would receive the 3rd Squadron of JF-17 Thunders.

We shall see.

My Guess is the same, though I thought No.8 Squadron is the HAiders and it is this same squadron which gives Naval support to Pakistan Navy, These are the oldest mirages that we have in service...and need to be replaced soon

Two squadrons exist but that doesn't make up all 50 x JF-17 Block I units because at Kamra they have stationed further units for the test and evaluation centre I think I counted 12 x JF-17 based there but I don't know if they have recently transferred some to the two "operational squadrons"

And the 3rd squadron which will be made up of JF-17 Block II maybe 18 fighters will go to the PAF Mushaf thats Sargodha to the CCS (combat commanders school) which is Pakistans top gun school where they will develop tactics and strategy for air combat for JF-17 fighters makes very good sense it's not all about adding lots of fighters to the Air Force we need the pilots trained and we need to develop new tactics to get most out of the platform

Good thing is that flying hours of F16 and Mirage are always under threat because of the spares and high cost with JF-17 no restriction exists they can fly them day and night

Interesting thing is that this is where the F16s are based and so are the very old F-7 which I guess JF-17 Block II will be replacing

Now the CCS will have the best pilots and the best aircraft to fly a aircraft that will have full mission profile from air to air, air to ground and air to sea

I really hope they build fast like in 2010 when they built 16 units there's no question they can do that again and we soon see the 4th JF-17 squadron with no pause and delay
