Production JF-17's have only been flying with RD-93. We don't even know exactly what the progress of WS-13 is. Looking at the struggle they've had trying to mass produce WS-10, I'd wait for the engine to be installed on production JF-17s before breathing a sigh of relief.

Well, apparently, the first WS-13 powered JF-17 took off on March 18, 2010. This signifies that the Chinese are more confident in their own engine design. After all, it is more powerful than the current RD-93 and it is indigenous.

No, it had a taxi test, not a first flight. Even after the JF-17 flies with it, it'll still take a while longer to become operational.

Men, so far I've seen is that the JF-17 carries 2600kgs of fuel internally. My serious question is that how far can it fly without drop-tanks?

I don't have time to estimate but I have done it before.
1. find the maximum (ferry) range.
2. Find the size of the external tanks
3. Add the internal fuel to the external fuel
4. The total fuel gives you the ferry range.
5. Use the proption "internal fuel/total fuel" to estimate the range it would go on internal fuel only.

JF-17 Thunders have certain important additions which will take place in the coming future. Some of which would be In-Flight Refueling, Infra-Red Search and Track, WS-13 engines. We shall see how these additions pan out and when are they clear for operational use.

Question for member(s) knowledgeable in the performance of the WS-13 powerplant for the JF-17. Previous problems with the R-33 engine on the Mig-29 were resulting in a mean time between overhauls of around 800 hours. This was costing the Indians and the Peruvians around $400K US per engine to have it service at the factory in Russian. Now that India has a maintenance/support facility, and the ability to rebuild their own engines the mean time between overhauls have been increased. The RD-93 has an even better service record in addition to now being “smokeless”.
My question is as follows: is the reliability of the WS-13 engine better than that of the RD-93? Is it between Russian engine reliability of more like the western power plants, which have around 4000 hours between overhaul?

Thanks

WS-13 is quoted by CAC officer and PAF chief of having additional 10% thrust than RD-93.

Regarding WS-13 reliability and durability compare to RD-93. This answer is so far unknown to layman.

But RD-93 will be a mature product. So its has the advantage in these area since WS-13 is relative new.'

Another thing is WS-13 is not certify yet. So RD-93 engine will only be the engine available to serve existing FC-1 fleet for certain years.

JF17 powered by WS13 is to come!
