Are we sure this is cope cage and not camo webbing? There is no coverage from the sides at all.
Hard to say, maybe dual purpose. Never have seen these on JGSDF tanks before, despite their frequent use of camouflage nets on there tanks.

Here some more pictures of a Type 10 and a Type 90 tank, this time they use a mesh. No side protection either.

I think that these cages are intended to protect the tanks from grenades dropped from drones from above not from suicide drones. Japan seems aware of the threat modern FPV-drones prove to tanks. They plan to modernise their Type 10 fleet by installing an active protection system and a 30mm gun. This was announced by the Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency (ATLA) of the Ministry of Defense on June 28, 2024, . Currently they conducting tests on the Kongsberg RS6 remote-operated module (outfitted with a 30mm gun). This module is expected to be integrated into the active protection system and will feature sensors capable of detecting high-speed objects, particularly drones.

Although the exact number of tanks to be modernized has not yet been disclosed, Japan plans to acquire approximately 300 RS6 modules, which will be produced domestically at a rate of 10 units per year. As far as i konw they plan to produce around 300 Type 10 mbts.

This makes a lot of sense.

Tankers of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces have implemented the experience of the Russian Armed Forces and began to equip their tanks with special "Mangals" for protection against drones. As reported, the Japanese Type 90 and Type 10 tanks received the "Mangal" protection against drones. It is worth noting that the protection installed on the Japanese tanks is symbolic, it is capable of protecting only the roof of the tank turret. The design does not protect the tank from being hit by an FPV drone. The Type 90 tank was adopted by Japan in 1992, and production of the tanks was completed in 2012. The Type 10 tank was adopted in 2012. It is planned that over time, the Type 10 tank will replace the outdated Type 74 tanks and complement the fleet of Type 90 tanks. Both tanks are equipped with a 120 mm gun, but the Type 10 tank has an automatic loader and a high degree of automation.

Some protection is still better than none, after all.
