Hmmm...the 73.3 billon yen destroyer is about 750 million dollars.

It his another Akizuki? Or is it the expected follow on 26DD destroyer I wonder?

It is certainly not enough for the 26DDH carriers.

Jeff: Could it be 25DD we talked about in the
JMSDF Akizuki Class DDG (19DD AEGIS-like)
thread? It seem 25DD is "a cheaper continuation" of 19DD, with just 16 VLS installed (another 16 optional), all FC3-3A antennas on the foremast, COGLAG propulsion to save fuel (?) etc.

Do they mean losing in WWII? Korea was occupied in 1910, long before WWII broke out in 1937 - Marco Polo Bridge incident.

Jura, I believe you are correct. Here is a translation of the 1st paragraph which would tend to agree with what you have said:

Wiki-Japan said:
25DD: The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force has allocated 70.1 billion yen in the next FY budget to build the first of a new general purpose escort destroyer. The vessel will have a full-load displacement of 5000 t. It will be a follow on design to the Akizuki (19DD) destroyers.

According to the translation, the specs would be:

Displacement: 5,000 tons
Length: 151 M
Beam: 18.3 m
Speed: 30 knots
Propulsion:
- COGLAG
- 2 x LM2500IEC gas turbine
- 2 x 2.5 MW / 3,400 HP Electric Motors
Sensors:
- FCS-3 multi-function radar
- OQQ-24 Bow Sonar
- OQR-4 towed array
Armament:
- 16 x Mk-41 cells, ESSM, VL ASROC
- 8 x Type 90 SSM
- 1 x 127mm DP gun, 62 caliber
- 2 x 20mm Phalanx CIWS
- 2 x 3 533mm torpedo tubes
Aircraft: 1 SH-60K ASW Helo & hanger

This is the only depiction of what it is planned to look like I have found:

Some clarification on the next generation 5,000t DD.
The mission profile of this class differs from the Akizuki class in which this class will be geared towards ASuW with the COGLAG power train similar to the British Type 23 CODLAG.
JMSDF had concerns of potential adversary sub's acoustic trails shrinking and in the next 10~15 years they may find it difficult to accurately track them so JMSDF in countering future threats developed this next generation 5000t DD. Which will probably work at the outer rim of an ESG working with Akizuki class, Takanami class and/or a Murasame class as escort.
It is also said that they will swap the Thales APAR with a domestically developed Continuous Wave Illuminator.

Re: Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force receives first two Kawasaki P-1 MPA

Japanese military exports also seem to be some thing to be avoided by Japan the almost go out of their way to either not export or only build parts for others.

This will no doubtfully change in the near future. India had already made a tender for acquisition of 15 US-2 flying boats made by ShinMeiwa.
I believe Japan will start negotiation with nations that had exchanged technical exchange treaties with Japan which are Australia, Britain, India, Philippines and lastly US of A this list will probably grow in the coming years to nations considering to adopt SM-3ⅡAs and some variants of F-35s.

...

SamuraiBlue: Thanks for the info, also about the AAM-4 missile you wrote about in the Akizuki thread!
I read the 25DD will also have a new type of radar for the detection of periscopes, snorkels, etc. sticking out of water ... could you please comment or look for this?

Hi Jura,

I looked into it but there are no detailed information except that JMSDF are considering to adopt a new surface scan radar for the purpose you had mentioned. JMSDF will also incorporate a new sonar technology called Multi Static Sonar in which one ship will use active sonar while the another ship will listen in on passive mode from a distance.
