looks great a bit on the light side. Likely her only combat actions will rolling in a neat and orderly formation too fire at A guy in a rubber suit who will then use nuclear fire breath too melt it like all the others that came before in a Toho Co., Ltd. film production.

Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) received the first two of a fleet of next generation P-1 Maritime Patrol Aircraft on Tuesday, with the planes scheduled to be deployed at Atsugi Air Base in Kanagawa Prefecture later this month, local media reported.

JMSDF has a massive fleet of P3C Orions, totaling more than 90 aircraft of all forms, making a home grown one was clever, it will give jobs to the local companys and keep production open for a very long time if they make anywhere near as much for replacements, a good effort and a good plane

Four jet engines no less. I wonder what the specs are compared to the P-8A? Well, I did a little research and here they are. I knew the P-8As, and looked up the P-1, and here are the two, sides by side:

---------------- USN P-8A ----------------- JMSDF P-1
Flt Crew: - 2 ------------------------- 2
Misson : -- 7 ------------------------- 11
Length : - 129' 5" -------------------- 124' 8"
WingSpn: - 123' 6" -------------------- 114' 8"
Height : - 42' 1" --------------------- 38' 4"
Max wgt: - 189,200 lbs --------------- 176,000 lbs
Engines: - 2 x CFM56-7B @ 27k ea. --- 4 x XF-10 @ 13.5k each
Speed Mx:- 565 mph ------------------ 619 mph
Speed Crz: 505 mph ------------------ 516 mph
Range: - 4,850 miles ----------------- 4,970 miles
Ceiling: - 41,000 ft ------------------- 44,200 ft
Pylons: - 6 (2 ea wing, 2 fus) ---------- 8 (3 ea wing, 2 fus)
Internal Bay: YES --------------------- YES
Armament: Bombs, SLAM-ER, Harpoon, -- Bombs, Harpoon, Maverick, ASM-IC,
MK-54 torps, mines, depth charges, ---- MK-46 torps, mines, depth charges,
Rotary sonar bouy dispenser (100) ----- 30 preload sonar buoys, 70 reloads in aircraft
Numer needed: 120 -------------------- 70

The P-1 is a very capable MPA. It exeeds the specs of the P-8 in some areas (Interesting how they both develop the same amount of thrust, the P-8 with 2 engines, the P-1 with 4. Those US engines are among the most reliable in the world, having logged literally tens of millions of hours). In other areas, where the sensors differ, they seem to be very similarly outfitted for radar, MAD (same system except the US apparently has decided not to employ a MAD sensor), ECM, etc. The P-1 is a completely new build, purpose built aircraft. They designed this aircraft from the ground up for this role. That's expensive...but can also be a better option if you can do it.

Japan has only ordered a couple so far, so the unit costs will be relatively high. I don't think you'll be able to compare price until it has ordered a larger batch.

Also I only know what the US has charged foreign customers for the Poseidon - I have no idea what the USN is buying them for.

Cool, thanks. I read a report that said the latest batch of 10 P-1s would cost around 200 billion yen, which would be about $US 200 million per plane. Of course that price could drop a bit if larger batches are ordered.

Then the questions will be:

what's the JSDMF requirement is?
will they put these babies for export?
will they find any customer?
