The raydome on the top of the crow's nest is theOPS-20 surface radar which extends range towards the horizon.
I thought an OPS-20 contained bar-shaped parts as those I now put in the red ellipses:

S band although goes further within the atmosphere it has lower resolution and is more susceptible to stealth technology at same distance.

True and C-band is better at target discrimination which complements Akizuki and Asuhi's loadout of ESSMs for medium range air defence. They can also datalink better quality track info to other S-band radar equiped destroyers.

Also I was actually confused by the rectangular faces with a SATCOM in between them. I thought they were another set of arrays but after looking a 2nd time, there were none facing stern. So they're either for navigation or not search radars at all.

The Ministry of Defense considered cancelling the purchase of Global Hawk reconnaissance drones after maker Northrop Grumman Corp. bumped up the projected cost by 23 percent from the initial 2014 estimate, according to internal ministry documents revealed on Aug. 21 by the Japanese Communist Party (JCP).

Today North Korea fired missile over Japanese mainland

USN and JMSDF politely asked Kim to stop doing it or they will announce more naval excercise

spineless navy's both sitting watching, what is SM3 for what is AGEIS for what about BMD? Why was it not shot down and intercepted

I said it long time ago if they don't take it seriously things are going to escalate well they just have

Now they can go back and start new war games while ignoring real threats

This is pathetic

Because above 100Km it's considered international space, the missile made passage at heights of 220Km making it a serious violation against the freedom of passage.
It's the same as not shooting down spy satellites within your border.

I thought a few weeks ago Japanese minister said they would shoot down the missile if passing through Japanese islands ? :p:p:p
