The type 03 was originally studied by the JMSDF but eventually selected the ESSM but now JMSDF is having second thoughts since ESSM only has semi-active terminal guidance limiting the number of missiles they can launch at one time.
The type 03 is equipped with a fully active terminal seeker so it does not need terminal guidance from the ship making it more useful under saturated attack.
By the way the the variant of the type 03 SAM for the JASDF is the AAM-4 AKA type 99 AAM.
As for width, the maximum canister width for Mk41 is 71 cm so it can fit a quad pack type 03.

For size quite sure 1 cell of Mk 41 do 63 cm but for Mk 57 do 71 cm... maybe the confusion in more
very difficult to have the size of the cell itself in fact canister max size.
I have search several times and i know the difficulty...

variant, project
was previously canceled but effectively resurrected in 2016
But only project ... I thought you were saying that the missile for a ship existed a big difference.

vaporware?
Not really since the projectile had already been placed into operation with the VL sequence so the only gap is the Mr 41 VLS software with the ship firing system.
In the past the US had blocked that passage with black box protection but the US has more to gain then to lose at this point so I believe it will go more smoothly.

(two automatic translations I tried were poor, plus the ships weren't in a single picture)

さて、今回撮った「あさひ」初動公試。 1つ前の汎用型DD「あきづき」初動公試時と同アングルで。電子戦装置の位置など似て非なる2隻ですにゃ

the meaning (LOL at least for me) is a visual comparison of the new class with my favorite: the Akizuki

North Korea just launched missile into Japan's economic zone

Now Japan will announce more naval excercise

Shoot the missile down for goodness sake
Interesting.

They have taken the high portion of the after deck house and moved it to the back of the bridge deck house. I believe that the aft facing radars/APARs are there now instead of attached to the after deck house.

other than that, the vessels appear to be pretty much a very similar build to the Akizuki.

I know these two are more focused on ASW, but with the 32 cell VLS, they appear to have just about as strong a air defense capability.

Samrai, do these two new ships not carry the same integrated defense system as the Akizukis?

also from wikipedia, seems like OPY-1 removes thales ICWI for local made ICWI, which lead to lesser targets the ESSM is able to handle at any time.. I dont know how accurate I'm reading it though.

Basically that is correct.
The FCS-3A installed within the JS Asahi has a different illuminator, the one installed within the Akizuki class are made by Thales while the one installed within JS Asahi is an indigenous made one but this one has not been confirmed.
