Here is a long breathed deck announce by MITI last year concerning the road map in transition to a hydrogen society.
Basically compact fuel cells for homes has been on the market for the last 7 years with prices going down to 1.45 million yen per unit and predicts that it will reach around 50% penetration rate by around 2030.
Large scale co-generation fuel cells for business complex with output between 5~250K watts is already under test in actual buildings and will be placed on the market in 2017.
We already know about Toyota Mirai which was placed on market last year and Honda CLARITY FUEL CELL on the market this year. Nissan will announce their own fuel cell powered car in 2017.
There are already around 100 Hydrogen station in Japan with another 100 station planned to be opened by 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Hydrogen society is not about the future it's about implementing it now so it becomes the future and Japan is the fore runner in this field.
