Yes they claimed it was designed to handle a quake no bigger then 7.5, this one is now officially at 9.0. Sadly the death toll will be high, the economic impacts (lost of productivity and food source) will be known in a few weeks. BTW a volcano in the south also erupted. People in Japan are prepared for the big one, but many hope they will never see one, the big one known as Great Kantō earthquake is the one they fear the most. The current one is now known as the Honshu earthquake which is to the north of Tokyo. Kantō quake will be to the south and very close to Tokyo. Pray we never get to witness the Kantō earthquake nor the San Fransisco quake.

lol i dont believe Japanese authority either, their earlier reports were obviously watered down, and whatever they are saying right now are certainly unreliable...though I too am reluctant to believe that the worst case scenario is likely, its definitely not "just a small leak" as the Japanese government claimed

I hope the Chinese government can send a massive amount of relief goods given the proximity to Japan, availability of ports in western Japan, and availability of relief goods in China. Power Generators, batteries, food, blanket and clothings, and temporary shelters are in short supply.

That's like telling the Americans to send massive amount of relief supplies to Iran and Alqaeda. If the government does that, countless Chinese people would probably smash their local city hall and another few thousand would protest on the Tiananmen square.

You won't believe the amount of hatred Chinese people have towards the Japanese.

I guess there will be a lot of broken windows in city halls across china then because they have sent urban Search and Rescue teams and supplies to Japan.

If this is really true, than it clearly shows what China is really like i.e. having no sympathy for the Japanese during a catastrophic disaster. But I doubt the Chinese people can be that heartless. Time will tell whether Japan will be taken advantage of including the sea territorial disputes.

Japan will have an advantage because of the earthquake. Due to the earthquake, the world will sympathizing Japan, similarly to China soon after Wenchuan. Because of the earthquake, Western medias can't say the typical bad things about China, at least not as much as they used to.

China has already sent aid and a rescue team and I read today Beijing has increased its aid package. It's sort moot discussing it since it's already happening and there's no protesting over it.

That's really short-sighted. Japan is not going to disappear anytime soon unless another earthquake 1000 x the magnitude of current one happens again. It builds more goodwill and more effective in countering the right-wing elements within Japan.

Even Sun Tzu will surely be agreable to this soft power approach.
