The Chinese have been experimenting with front-opening canopies since the J-7 days.
idk about 'experimenting with' considering thats just what they got with the early mig-21s. iirc the front hinging design on the mig-21 was originally intended to help shield the pilot during supersonic ejection -- something the us was also worried about during the early days of supersonic aircraft. the us went with crew capsules until supersonic ejection incidents showed that they were survivable without extensive protective measures.
i can't think of any other chinese aircraft that subsequently used front hinging canopy, even the later marks of the j-7 that were closer to the original f-13 than the mf/bis switched to rear hinge.
anyways the intents behind front hinge canopy of the mig-21f-13 and the j-35 i expect to be completely unrelated

Early J-8 also used frontal hinge.

I frankly don't think it's some significant "technology" here, designers just chose whatever is more convenient.

This is most likely fake, but worth posting here:

I'm assuming this is something other than a J-35 but, I don't know many planes or trainers with a screen that wide and seamless. Could it be that the latest trainers have better screens?
Quick edit: At the very least I'm certain this is Chinese because it has chinese text, not on the screen but on the red plaque with LOCK written on it in english

Besides all the latest images of the SAC J-XDS, there was also a J-35A seen at SAC.

... but I'm not sure if a new aircraft or one of those already known.
PS: Based on the fact, that it has the pivot-style horizontal tail mechanism it should be an early (the first ?) prototype.
