: PLAN is funding next carrier jet based on FC-31 w/ modifications especially sensor suite upgrade. 611 will develop J20 two seater that would serve as a command center to guide drone(s).

My guess is the WS-19 project is real and will be the engine of choice.

What do they mean by sensor "upgrade"? I thought the FC-31 prototype had no radar installed.

Not clear. My read is the flight control and combat system could be written by Chengdu, to ensure compatibility with J20

This doesn't make much sense; how exactly does sharing flight control & combat systems make a platform more "compatible" with another?

Communication? passing on the command of drones back and forth? The post suggests FC31's sensor suite will be brought up to speed to J20 level. If J20 becomes the command center of drones I expect soem sort of data exchange between J20 and FC31. This is rumor + my guess so we have to wait for it play out.

Remember the future of aerial combat appears to be the battle network.

What the Chinese don't want to repeat is how the F-22 struggles to communicate with the F-35 or E-2 AWACS

The rumour was that all of China’s best aerospace companies were fully committed to the J20, so SAC had to settle for companies not picked for the J20 when they decided to press ahead with the J31 despite loosing the PLAAF competition to the J20.

If, and that is a big ‘if’, the PLAN has opted for the J31, they would have the necessary pull to get those top tier Chinese companies to also work on the J31, whereas before, had SAC came asking as a private company working on a project not officially backed by the Chinese military, the answer would have been a hard no.

It’s probably less to do with compatibility and more to do with competence and performance.
