How is that contradictory?
The contradiction is the claim that decision was being clean cut from the beginning.
Your suggested timeline clearly shows it's a long decision process from learning & accumulating actual carrier operation.

Yes, it was clean cut from the beginning when the actual decision was made based on assessing the competing proposals designed around PLAN requirements.
That said, "the beginning" was when they made the decision to go for SAC's proposal over CAC's proposal which likely occurred some time in the early/mid 2010s.

If you interpreted "the beginning" as meaning "mid 2000s vague idea of wanting a 5th gen carrier fighter and conceived of a J-20 variant initially" then I think you are misunderstanding how a program like this works and also misunderstanding the timeline.

Or putting it this way -- how can a decision be clear cut when there were no candidates designed around actual requirements to consider and decide on in the first place?

J-35 spec in recent Chinese media:

Will be interesting to see if PLAN do go for TVC on J35 after PLAAF seemingly rejected it for J20/WS15 (for sound reasons IMHO).

Extra maintenance factors aside, surely it'll be useful in assisting carrier landings? There's combat advantages, too.

Also the J-20A having no TVC isn't set in stone, right?
