Who is going to buy the export carrier based variant? Russia? India? Pakistan? Australia? Brazil? Thailand?
The Saudis and their massive piles of money could certainly afford a carrier or two, wouldn't be the first time they splurged on big-ticket military hardware before.

What about these variants:

-land based
-land based (export)
-carrier based (CATOBAR)
-carrier based (STOBAR)

… if we HAVE to make 4 versions fit. Other reasonable candidates for that 4th version would be EW ‘D’ version, twin seater, unmanned - in that order.

4 versions does seem a bit odd though.

STOBAR version would be VTOL, which according to Deino, is highly unlikely.

India, and Japan.
In a world where China is triumphant I can see Japan buying FC-31 derived aircraft, and they would use it and other goodies to shit on what remains of the US whenever possible. It's not beyond imagination. But even in that situation I don't see India buying any.

Actually while we're on that topic, CATOBAR vs STOBAR variant is interesting. Besides launch bar on the front landing gear though would there be any differences between the two? If they add a ramp to the front of Izumo-class plus arresting wires could a STOBAR aircraft operate from it?

I would guess if Queen Elizabeth-class had arresting wires it could manage given its size.

For goodness sake, STOBAR is not VSTOL.

There will NEVER be a VSTOL J-35/31… do you not understand why? It’s in the number of engines.

A J-15 is STOBAR. A J-15T/B is CATOBAR. There’s a difference. You can’t fanboy your way into resolving such engineering issues.

There is no reason a J-35 cannot take off from STOBAR carrier with a lighter load. There is also no reason imo to create s separate variant of J-35 just for STOBAR carrier. There are many reasons why J-15B was developed. Probably using WS-10H engine, improved electronics and strengthened airframe/nose landing gear to handle the pounding of CATOBAR carrier. There is no reason J-15B or J-35 cannot operate off from STOBAR carrier.

If I had to guess, the 4 variant of FC-31 project will be
J-35
land variant
Two seat variant
Special EW aircraft
I don't think they need a separate export variant.
