Re: New Generation Fighter
I don't think we're going to know this stuff for a long time. My personal conception of the situation at this point is that the J-XX is not quite at the level of the F-22, based mainly on how it looks (i.e. much bigger, slightly less stealthy looking) but that it is just about the only other true 4th gen aircraft in existence (except for maybe the T-50).
I think almost everyone would agree with your assessment. While the plane's design and performance is obviously critical, it's electronics and network centric capabilities of the platform also determines how effective it is especially when we're talking 5th gen aircraft. We probably won;t know the effectiveness of the latter for a very long time!!!
In some ways I think the J-20 also proves just how far ahead the F-22 is compared to it's peers. Most folks seem to forget that YF-22/23 first flew in 1990 and production F-22 rolled out maybe 5 yrs later and are pretty much the same as the ones we see flying today. I wouldn't be surprise if 6th Gen fighters are already in the works or prototypes maybe even flying at night around China Lake.
Kudos to China though for having come a long way. As the saying goes fake it till you make it! China's military development is getting to the threshold of maturity where they are now at the point that they can slowly tranverse from "faking" to "making".
