Re: New Generation Fighter

Where did you get that from? I thought canards were good for supersonic performance (well not bad certainly...

Can anyone else with more knowledge comment please?

Its better for supersonic flight. Basically lower supersonic drag and higher supersonic maneuverability.

The Gripen

In the end an unstable canard layout was adopted, as it would give the greatest benefits to performance, as it gives a high onset of pitch rate and low drag enabling the aircraft to be faster, have longer range and carry a larger useful payload.

Other advantages with a canard is more lift during take off and landing, 10% better supersonic turning performance and lower supersonic drag. Also envisioned was the possibility to point the nose off the direction of travel. The canard can also be used as an air brake after landing.

Why spare the chance when you can make that guy pee his pants in his own plane?

And turn that smug into a martyr? Nah...and how he has years to grow moss inside the jail for corruption charges, his family fall from grace, and the mainstream DPP finally learned to move on.

But back to topic, J-20 to conduct precision strike without alerting OpFor air defense network is possible, how effective that'd be will depend on the effectiveness of the RCS performance of J-20 (bet it'd be just guesses galore until J-20 was exported), OpFor air defense capability and mission planning...as we all know, "stealth" never indicate "unseen", but "difficult to see" by radar, or reflect signal too weak too faint that radar software would automatically filter it out as noise.

No new photos for ... 24 hours? What happened? The Chines secrect police finally been able to arrest all the photographer :D? (kidding)

actually it already been done, during mock air combat, F-22 manage to get E-3A within the AIM-120A killing range, what make this even more impressive it that E-3A was escorted by F-15C.
F-22 APG-77 radar operate in LPI mode mean traditional RWR unable to detect her RF emission.

Denial of OpFor aerial support elements (AWACS, ECM, ESM aerial tankers), if US can't guarantee to pin and/or destroy PLAAF on the ground right off, the advent of J-20 will require a change of game plan...perhaps the use of UCAV to bleed PLAAF enough first.

To be fair there are a dozen high def photos on the web right now. The only thing that could cause sensation would be a video or the bird in flight.

Re: New Generation Fighter

Recently a Chinese military program on CCTV 7 talked about using stealth aircrafts as mini-awacs for unmanned attack drones. Given J-20's large fuel capacity and potentially powerful radar this may be one of its many uses. ... ...

I think you have shown one the critical primary usage for J-20.

We all know that China Central government is channeling huge sum of money USD 2.3 Trillions to perform R&D on the next 7 big technology frontiers for the next 5 years. One of them is (IOT -- M2M) technology.

Just my 3 cents -- primary usage for J-20 comes from the future battle situation below:

1) Satellite communications are down on both sides. (Killer SAT had been working hard)

2) Flying the regular PLAAF AWACS in search of Carriers are risky when the other side are deploying F-22.

3) PLAAF can string and digitally link a squadron of J-20 to act as the (most forward) multiple mini
AWACS platforms
and acting as an airborne wireless digital switches to relay and directly channel back and forth data links between (the UAV spotter, the UCAV drones,
the regular AWACS planes, Submarines, and the Central Command to locate the Carriers group.
Those data link will use the (IOT -- M2M) tech.

4) F-22 will have a hard time penetrating and searching for PLA assets without being destroyed first by J-20 that garrisoning the front line.

Purpose #1: J-20 = mini AWACS plane and airborne data center that can defend itself and destroy the stealthy enemy.

-------------------------------------------------------

Just my 3 cents ... ...

Designing the huge and long body is a must have requirement for J-20 for the reason below:

1) Huge and long body will house a huge fuel tank to provide around the clock AWACS platform coverage.
Because midair refueling is risky for the PLAAF Tankers when F-22 are around.

2) Huge and long body will accommodate long S-shape air inlet.

3) The S-shape air inlet can hide the engine blades inside to significantly increase stealth.

4) The long S-shape air inlet can adjust the Air Flow Speed inside the air inlet to optimize Air Flow speed variances from subsonic to supersonic.

5) The long S-shape air inlet can hide the Air Flow Speed Valves to increase stealth as well.
