Re: New Generation Fighter

Didn't the general also said the new fighter would still take about 10 years for its first flight? If that's true then their new fighter won't able to enter service until c.2030. That sounds reasonable since PLAF's main fighters are still J-7 and J-8, that's on average 30 years behind western countries.

30 years a bit of a stretch, its prolly robert gates says to himself every night before he goes to sleep

Re: New Generation Fighter

speaking of the new fighter, the Chinese Airforce Commander just announced on CCTY yesterday that the new generation fighter is gonna test flight in a year and be in operation with the AF in 8 to 10 years. Link to the CCTY video could be provided if one wants.

Btw one of my friend who is now in the Airforce told me they gonna replace all the f22 with 35s duo to the high maintaince and unit cost of 22?? Can some1 confirm this? If so, what would they do with all those f-22s?

The F-35 is multirole, and most future users consider it adequate for air superiority needs.

Far from impossible. If true, F-22 will just join the likes of the SR-71 & F-117 which were revolutionary when introduced but suffered from a relatively short life due to various reasons.

Ya my bad for the horrible spelling on CCTV, but is it possible for china to field a good amount of the new generation stealth fighter in 10 years? After all, it should be somewhat possible since it is declared by the supreme Airforce commander.

For the F-22 and F-35 statement i made earlier, I meant that they may be replaced due to the high maintance cost. If so, what are they gonna be replaced with and what would happen to the retired f-22s??? Sell to other allied nations for a discounted price?

Re: New Generation Fighter

Why are they bragging about the 4th gen fighter like this? It's almost as if the PLAAF wants the US Congress to resurrect the F-22A procurement, not that that's bad.

Yeah I'm a bit apprehensive about China being more transperant about the PLAAF. On the one hand being more transparent tells us how far development on various projects is of course, which is a good thing.
But then they will tell adversaries that they should arm themselves more because the PLA is getting better weapons...

I personally hope the US doesn't continue to get more F-22's, because the limited number of F-22s seem to be the only absoloute advantage for China's future 4th generation fighter (espicially as the F-35 has so many more limitations than an F-22 class fighter).

I think it's good. Part of their progression in becoming more transparent. There really is no reason why PLAAF shouldn't be more transparent. Has USAF aided anyone else' fighter jet program by telling people that F-22 and F-35 projects? I doubt it. And if US congress keeps buying more F-22A, it will just eventually bankrupt US gov't, if it's not the case already. China is likely to have a hi-lo combination for the 4th generation fighters and it's likely to procure about the same # of hi 4th gen fighter as F-22.

Transparency might actually be a good thing. Telling your potential rivals and adversaries what you have is a way to reassure them that you're not trying to pull off anything sneaky. Besides, it's not like US intelligence probably couldn't figure out how far along China is from other passive indicators.
