Nah, they were too busy dreaming up other ways to try and discredit the news. Like the claims that it is only a mock up which was rapidly changed to claims that it is a 'ground demonstrator' that could only taxi around but cannot actually fly; when she flew, there came the claims that she is a one-off tech demonstrator and that she doesn't have weapons bays; when pictures of weapons bays emerged, it was claimed the J20 is a 23m monster that will only be able to fly fast (and not very fast because she is underpowered and DSI prevents it going faster than M2) and not be a true all round air dominance fighter like the F22; to this day, there are still people who insist that the J20 is 23m+ and is a stealth striker and doesn't have nearly enough wing to dogfight.

These claims are all made or championed by the same sort of people, and they ate wrong so often that it really isn't much of an accomplishment or surprise when their claims are proven wrong, as usual.

People like that probably have to look the word 'shame' up in dictionary.com to know what it means.

Actually, what they need to look up is not "shame" but "shameless"...

I think the ventral fins on this new prototype (let's just call it 2003) are still there?

Agreed ! But especially in this image You can clearly see the different location of the sat ! So either this is a new bird or they repainted no. 2001.

I think thats quite likely. 2001 the flying prototype, and 2002 the static testbed.

Could be ... but I think the J-10 1002 prototype never saw the light of the day outside of CAC's hangars. So why would they tug a fully-painted static-test specimen out on the tarmac ??

I agree with deino -- the static test frames usually aren't seen, only heard of. Besides, looking at what little of the plane we can see, it doesn't exactly look like it's been through much stress.

I'd be wagering, that if this indeed is a new prototype (and they aren't just trolling us by repainting 2001), that it is 2003. Even huitong has mentioned it, and with the recent visits to CAC by high up officials it makes a lot of sense.

This J20 with the different positioned star is extremely unlikely to be the static test airframe.

The few pictures I have seen of Chinese static test airframes while they are still undergoing tests have all been unpainted airframes with primer only. In addition, unless the testing has already been finished, the static test airframe would have all sorts of weights hanging off it to help simulate stress and loads.

Considering the recent CCTV report about when the first airframe was assembled, it is not possible that they could have finished static testing already.

This new picture could show a new prototype or the original repainted, but I would say it is safe to rule out it being of the static test airframe.
