In central Illinois, my Dad loved farming, so when he retired we bought a farm here. I was born in North Carolina, we moved to the boondocks on Okinawa, I could see the traffic pattern at Kadena Airfield, but my Dad was an IP in the C-130. I knew how to feather an engine on the 130 before I could read. LOL I'm very thankfull that I can talk to someone in China and I'm sure you must be very proud of the J-20, welcome to Sino Defense forums, theres a great bunch of guys on here, and you're right a much better attitude. There are some bright guys on here and I feel kind of back in touch with a world I lost when my Dad died. I do think its likely that there is currently one flying prototype, with another likely for ground testing. Brat

I should rephrase my comment above. I don't believe China percieve any imminent threat that J-20's can counter. But the fast deployment of J-20's may have political utility given the situation around China nowadays.

I've never been to Illinois. But I passed through NC many, many times, as I spent most of my US years on the East Coast. If you know Japan well and feel an affinity there, you should feel similarly once you are in China, well, probabaly especially so in Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. as they somehow preserve the culture better than the mainland in many aspects... Japan preserves lots of Chinese culture, too. Sorry to hear that your dad has passed on. I thought he's still around close to your family.

Yes, like most Chinese, I am very proud of, and excited about, the J-20. The first one of its kind that has both the looks and the innards that shouts "world class" Hehe... And the J-10 is very good, too!

Yes, I can assure you that from this side of the pond, there are many who are concerned about our own defense as well, and while no one desires to return to the cold war, I think mutual strength and respect is a good place for all the players to be. I can assure you that the American people value the relationships that we have with other leaders in the world. As a pilot and defense enthusiast, I am pleased, but slightly amused to see the Chengdo daily/weekly airshow starring the J-20. I honestly think this bode well for Sino-American relationships, as much of what we do is defense marketing, its interesting to see the J-20 being actively shown and marketed.

It is indeed, and engineer and mig-29 have brought me up to speed on some of the finer aspects of the J-20 and paintgun an several others have posted some great pictures. I have loved looking at airplanes and watching them fly since I was a child. I just popped over and looked at some of Deino's graphics on another sight of the J-10b and yes it is impressive. Many would underestimate the importance of mutual respect, and with the threats to both our countries internally, I think it behooves us all to get to know one another, and besides a little collegial competition can keep you at your best. I'm glad to know you know North Carolina and I have often thought I would love to visit the far east again. We had a Cessna 172 and if you get back over my little brother still has his license current, maybe we could go flying or a least have a good steak, well I better turn in before the boss wakes up and says what are you doing. Keep us up to date, and we have a an F-35 thread as well.

Am I the only one incredulous that there's a road right there?

No sir, you are not, I have humoruously referred to this setup as the Chengdu daily airshow, but you would obviously know more than I, but I think there are several things going on here. Please correct me if I am wrong or need a little further direction. To refer to this as Marketing 101 seems correct, because as China has moved to a market based economy, the people want to know their getting a good bang for their buck, the J-20 is a source of national pride and showcases not only the military but civilian leadership as being able to get the job done. Possibly more importantly, it is a way to project power to the world, the US military, the Brits, the French, and the Russians all have done this for a long time, and personally I think China launching its first serious aircraft carrier, first fifth gen fighter, ad infinitum is just good business telling folks, friends and neighbors, "we have arrived".

Right. But suppose you have enough money, or you percieve a threat imminent, and you don't mind building many copies with the same flaws so that you could test all of them more or less in parallel, just as if you were testing only one prototype for the same number of tests sequentially.... Would that be engineering-wise doable?

Let's stick to reality instead of conjuring up scenarios, shall we?
