Yes, we've learned a lot in the short modern aviation era, but we're nowhere near the point where no model wind tunnel testing is required, or designing an advanced aircraft is just a matter of feeding your requirement into the computer without the need for much prototype testing, or any designer, especially those with the pumped-up ego, can just say I knew of and has completely analyzed an aircraft's aerodynamics anytime a new advanced aircraft comes into the scene. Two aircrafts may share the same basic designs, for example F-15 and the Flanker, but they're also very different aerodynamically in the details.

Yeah, more like they wouldn't have so much problem if they knew of the aerodynamics design contradiction during the early design stage, or maybe their predicted compromises turn out much worse than they've predicted. This is another proof that no designer can claim that he completely understands an aircraft aerodynamics because we've done aerodynamic studies of every possible shapes, control surfaces, aircraft configurations, and their every possible variations thereof.

If you want my answer go to the aerodynamic section in forums members, and post it in the aerodynamic section otherwise let us leave it here you are free to believe as you wish.

In this section is mostly for pictures and news and some comment i read are not realistic, but i like the J-20 only as the posible military implications it might have for the security of east asia in Example Japan that will buy F-35 and probably build the F-3 stealth fighter.

But so far news and pictures are okay here

we just don't have evidence to substantiate any of that claim, photographic evidence shows that we have only 1 flying prototype, nozzle change, wear and tear, discrepancies does not mean anything, until we have a picture that shows us clearly two J-20s

i agree the J-20 looks polished for an early stage of testing, but there is a severely low number of hi-res photo of the J-20
only such photos can reveal/unravel J-20's true details, these hi-res are what people want to see, but yet to surface even until now

they must have more but at different stages of development

Hehe... To use plawolf's words, all fine points above, guys!

I have only come to believe it, not that firmly though. Let's hope that someoen in China will soon satisfy us with definitive clues or even straight answers.

By the way, thanks go to Mig-29 for supporting the idea in some ways. For it certainly is my wish that they didi have 6 or more prototypes.

P.S. I am in China. Just that, unfortunately, I am not the kind of "someone in China" who has the definitive answers.

This is really a very nice forum (and also sinodefence.com). We have all kinds of opposing opinions from peoples of all over the world, yet we can, by and large, and in the end always, all get along. Much, much better than some of the forums or sub-forums abducted by groups of disgustingly nationalistic radical creatures... Hehe...

I hear ya, their mums must not be very succesfull at teaching them manners, it is kind of nice isnt it. Though some of the more spirited discussions do get the ax right at the climatic moment. There is certainly nothing wrong with being a patriot or passionate, I really enjoy seeing what the other folks are building and flying, I really have ended up liking the J-20 a lot, now wheres that aerodynamic forum?

It's been a great disappointment here on the Chinese military forums that 1.11 (Jan. 11th) did not bring the fans any excitement at all (tests of new toys), as it had in the past. They are not anticipatig 1.24, of which I haven't figured out the significance yet.

I don't expect there will be two flying prototypes this early, let alone five or six. You want to iron out as many problems as possible in the first prototype before building more. Otherwise, you would just be making many copies of design flaws.

Right. But suppose you have enough money, or you percieve a threat imminent, and you don't mind building many copies with the same flaws so that you could test all of them more or less in parallel, just as if you were testing only one prototype for the same number of tests sequentially.... Would that be engineering-wise doable?
