There was also a picture a few years back of a Chinese engineer in a white lab coat with a pretty impressive looking HMS not too dissimilar to the F35's HMDS or JHMCSs. I thought I had saved that image, but could not find it on my computer, and a google search did not turn up the picture either.

If anyone knows which image I am talking about and can post a link to it, I would be most grateful. In the meantime, here is a placeholder that I think we can all be grateful is not what the PLAAF plan to use. ;)

I think I know which pic you are talking about though I don't have it either, and I didn't get what HMS is untill saw the pics. (Edit: On second thought, maybe we are not talking the same thing, I remember it's more like Euro Tiger attack chopper's helmet, rather than F-35's)

Quick question: Who ELSE having a first impression this is a little girl trying out some fancy gadget? - The point is she is not a little girl.

I found this one but I'm not sure if it's the one you were talking about because the F-35 has a visor type display while this one is binocular like. I think visor type has advantage of a wider view and less blind spots.

edit: or is that what they're supposed to look like underneath? Here is for the typhoon and it has two glowing rings inside too.

I think this is the HMS set up used on the J10 and maybe J11B. This was displayed at an air show, although I cannot remember which one.

The J7 uses this HMS set up.

Although they may have since moved to this refined design with more accurate head tracking.

Note in the first picture theRe is a visor, it seems to be raised.

Awesome! Cheers mate, that was exactly the photo I was talking about.

The early model HMDS for the F35 did employ lenses.

But the latest version seemed to have done away with them and instead projects the information onto the visor just in front of the pilot's eyes. That is why the eyes appear to glow green. But as this picture shows, there is no lenses in front of the eyes.

What exactly is the use of lenses in the first place on hmds? I always assumed it was to do with night vision projection, with the actual info projected onto the visor..? Hmm I don't know

But I think we can be confident j-20 will feature an advanced hmd. My hope is they have a refit in place for older fourth gen aircraft like jhmcs, to be put on existing helmets.
