I asked this before and I'll ask it again. Don't any of you fellows find it curious that the one and only flight of the J-20 took place when US Sec of Defense was in China? Since January there's been about zero news about this aircraft. Zero. What is going on?? Any of you care to speculate?

I think Hu and Gates was discussing something and it would benefit Hu's argument if J-20 was shown. I am just speculating.Since PRC never release enough information to anyone.

Nothing strange about it. I've said all along the Jan flight was obviously just a political/publicity event. Real first flight already happened before that and continuing somewhere else.
Does anyone seriously think PLA will do serious flight tests with the ridiculous level of openness seen then ? No mystery why they chose 11th Jan, just look at what PLA did on previous 11th Jan. The question is whether they intentionally arranged for Gates to visit on 11th Jan.

That's because the Chinese authority have got what they needed at that time, and now the real work continues somewhere else as before, secluded from public view. What they did were to make the whole thing subtle enough that officially they need neither to acknowledge nor deny its existence, yet deliver enough shock & awe to the world in general...after all, everyone outside China said the Chinese can't get something like that flying before 2020.

I'd say that Chinese government statements at this point is irrelevant in either case. Do you know any government who'd say "Yes, you're right. We did this because you're here. Now what are you going to do about it...?"

CAC were going to make the first flight of the J-20 a bit of a ceremony anyway, just like they did the J-10 (keep in mind they probably already flew the J-20 before this "first flight" in front of VIPs, just to make sure everything worked). Gates was due in China around that time, so someone must've had the bright idea to time it perfectly for some political funsies.

We're not seeing any pictures now because the show's over and they don't need to show it off anymore because it's undergoing proper tests in a remote airbase probably somewhere in western china.
