Hmm ... but first combat unit was the 9th AB and according to @huitong "The first two

s was rumored to have entered the service with the PLAAF 9th Brigade at Wuhu Airbase on January 13, 2019"

I did some digging around, and the March 9, 2017 date seems to stem from

. However, the press release itself refers to a CCTV broadcast aired on March 9, 2017, which revealed for the first time that J-20s were in active service. In other words, March 9 was the broadcast date, not the official service start date.

I would like to retract and edit the original post, but the edit window has expired. Could you maybe edit it for me or add a disclaimer so others don't carry away the wrong information? Thanks.

Just wondering as someone who is ignorant, is there any tactical or strategic value in having VLO fighter jets fly in such insanely tight formations? Or is this just showmanship/peacocking?
Skills to refuel multiple a/c simultaneously, or fly through confined spaces.
No way to be sure, but i suspect fooling long-wavelength 2D radars this way is still achievable.

Red nose is likely a protective cover over the radome. Maybe they realized slightly less skin maintenance is needed if they keep the radome covered.
I think it is a new primer. It conforms too well with the radome shape. And if radome maintenance was that significant of an issue we would likely see operational units using such a cover too.

circumstances were different during SU-35 purchase.

SU-35 become the headache for PLAAF, how to integrate Russian plane in squadron. PLAAF also rapidly phasing out Russian engines due to logistics/cost problems.

and do you really think, China will purchase SU-57 to just compare avionics/electronics with J-20. China is miles ahead, i repeat miles ahead in avionics/electronics sector.

( not a J-20 topic - but - )

Why doesn't PLAAF sell the Su-35 to Iran? Offload them as Iran is now starting to build up a Su-35 fleet and would welcome them at the correct price. Russia wont stop it as Russia is dependent on Iran alot at the moment, and China has learnt everything it wanted/needed to learn from the Su-35 ..

Not worth the political headache.

Besides, while the Su35s are as much a liability as they are an asset operationally speaking, they are still the most manoeuvrable fighters in the PLAAF, so the training value from using them as aggressions alone is probably worth the PLAAF keeping them.

And if the PLAAF are using them as aggressors, they might use up all their airframe hours a lot faster than normal and might be retired sooner than one light otherwise expect.
