The escorting J-20s were taking off from Yuhong AB(on the western outskirt of Shenyang city), home base of the 46th and 47th Regiments, 16th Surveillance Aircraft Division.

Could there be four J-20s for this event?

Note these shelters/hangars at northern side of the airbase are for the Y-8/9 type surveillance aircraft

A backup J-20?
A "Rapid Raptor" style deployment?

Doing "Rapid Raptor" ("Rapid 20"?) deployments -- characterized by small scale redeployments from their home bases, done so relatively quickly and being able to operate from their non-regular bases -- is something we've seen hints of in the last few years when we've seen transient deployments of 2-4x J-20s at any one time to smaller air bases.

J-20 numbers (and 5th generation numbers as a whole) will take a while to get to where the PLA ideally wants them to be in terms of total fleet size, so the ability to rapidly redeploy their available airframes to a given theater of action will be very important.
Additionally, it is likely that opfor nations will recognize that the regular air bases that operate J-20s as high priority targets and seek to strike them in event of a conflict. The ability to distribute the J-20s and their supporting crews and logistics tail in small packages that can be spread out among different bases will be quite important.

J-20s escort a Y-20 carrying the remains of Korean War soldiers.

Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, the PACAF commander, also told reporters during a media engagement Monday that China’s J-20, its most advanced fighter in production, isn’t “anything to lose a lot of sleep over,” indicating his belief that American fifth-gen fighters would be more than a match for the Chinese-made jets.
As for China’s specific military capabilities, the PACAF chief seemed unimpressed by one of Beijing’s most high-profile platforms, it’s fifth-generation J-20 stealth fighter jet, which began operating roughly a decade ago. Asked to describe his assessment of the jet, Wilsbach verbally shrugged, saying “It’s their most modern aircraft. We’ve had a limited opportunity to assess it. Seems okay. It seems okay. It’s not anything to lose a lot of sleep over, but they seem to be a building a lot of them.” He added that “It’s nothing that I would worry too much about. Our forces are really well trained and we’re very well equipped.”

Didn't he also say that E-3 has trouble picking it up before it is too late?

Gotta do some PR. Can't go around saying that the US is even 1% worried about something

I find it questionable though how such high level military people can flip-flop like that. I would expect a much higher degree of professionalism

OF course a Chinese commander will be worried, if he or she only achieves 99% destruction of US targets assigned and lets his/her rival PLA commander achieve 100% the mother will come phoning and proceed to nag for endless emotional damage /s

On topic, if J-20 is just an OK fighter what term does he then use for all the non-stealth US aircraft?
