Hmm. I guess it depends on what we mean by “small”. Like if hypothetically they increased composite share or improved some other structural aspect and shaved off 2-300 kg from an accumulation of small iterations is that small or major? That’s purely a hypothetical of course, not suggesting they did anything like that the J-20A, but curious to gauge and qualify these sorts of things.

I doubt there would have been widescale use of new manufacturing techniques that weren't already present in past production batches, and I doubt there would have been any change in weapons bay dimensions, as alluded.

Oh, I’m totally discarding the weapons bay claim. That one to me is far too conjectural. But I’m not as ready to discard manufacturing changes given how aggressively we’ve seen previous models iterate on manufacturing design.

Right, I was just imagining what a large scale internal reorganization would mean, I agree it’s probably not as big as I thought. I was taking the designers words at face value, in a translated form. Can someone listen to the original speech as described in the global times articles please?

Gong Feng, the deputy chief designer of the J-20, shared some new insights on the J-20's switch to domestically developed engines in a speech published by a social media account affiliated with the Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday.

From what I understand, the translation is accurate.

However, I'm not sure which domestic engine he's alluding to, WS-10 or WS-15.

He said in the past, due to the weakness of China's engine industry, the designers were forced to make compromises and adopt an interim engine. The interim engine wasn't designed for J-20, so the designers then have to make some compromises in J-20 performance in order to accommodate the interim engine. Now that the originally planned engine is ready, it will allow the J-20 to show its full potential.

Personally, I'm leaning towards WS-15, since this is the rumored "ultimate" J-20 engine that we've been hearing all this time, but I'm not 100% sure.

He stated that the j-20s with changed engines are in service, which can only mean ws-10.
