This is a perfect example of why it’s foolish to assume China doesn’t have something just because they don’t report on it being equipped.

This is them working on a modified/improved towed decoy, so the current model much be in operation. Yet we have had zero report of that.

Although limited by power and other reasons, this system is still difficult to deceive large early warning aircraft of the level of air police-2000, it can still produce a certain deception effect on air police-200. The experience of "cracking down on counterfeiting" of the first generation of practical early warning aircraft has also been used in the development of air police-500 early warning aircraft that are being delivered to our army in batches.

In the "fight counterfeiting" in the field of aviation weapons, another topic often discussed in recent years is the permanent equipment of foreign military aircraft, but it is rare on Soviet / Russian aircraft - towed active radar decoy (Trad). The basic principle of towing decoy is to use the towing device on the aircraft to tow the decoy, so that the decoy is not only separated from the aircraft, but also has the same motion characteristics as the aircraft. It will not be recognized by the active radar seeker of modern missiles as soon as chaff. In fact, the towing device itself is very similar to an old friend in the field of aviation weapon test and training - Aviation towing target, which is not complex; It is not technically difficult to replace the target with an angle reflector that increases the signal strength of the bait itself, but the angle reflector is difficult to "play the real image" from multiple angles and is easy to be recognized by modern radar seeker. Especially in the face of incoming missiles, a "wingman" who will not release interference is obviously deceptive, In addition to dragging down the mobility of the carrier, it does not play much role. To achieve such midcourse guidance accuracy, not only the target's active airspace needs to be "clean" enough, but also the target must be close enough to fire, which also brings great risks to the ground air defence system itself

In live fire confrontation, other surface to air missile systems that still retain command guidance technology use another set of playing method: when the performance of the radar system is not as good as that of the advanced model, the missile can attack the target mounted trad by tracking the decoy jamming source mode and changing the target parameters through command control. The logic is that since it is impossible for the missile seeker to identify the target and bait, and the bait cannot be "towed" in front of the aircraft anyway, according to the length of the towing rope of the existing trad and the heading of the target / bait relative to the position, adding a "advance" while using the front method can theoretically improve the damage probability.

I'm not sure if the J-20 in the background is meaningful in anyway.

However, it could relate to the title -- if J-20 was to be integrated with a towed decoy, as a 5th generation fighter it would require some minor degree of structural modification to carry a towed decoy system.

But who knows
