I'm embarrassed to admit that I spent some time looking at the picture for smoke before I got that you meant smoke metaphorically...There’s just way too much smoke for there not to be some kind of major development with the J-20’s engines

This video shows around 15 degrees of sustained turn rate to my untrained eye.
If smoke were a sure sign of engine progress maybe the FC-31 is actually already flying with the WS-19I'm embarrassed to admit that I spent some time looking at the picture for smoke before I got that you meant smoke metaphorically...
A J-20 with a pair of previously unseen engines (WS-15) was allegedly spotted on the ground and while performing a vertical climb.

Might be passing around anecdotes for others. Feels like there's a lot more of that these days with the tighter information controls. That image was first shared by an artist, literally a CG artist. As far as I know, he has no track record of anything beyond his military artwork. That's not to say that there isn't something happening on the engine front, but this image isn't it.
Due to my I think general scepticism and also since such reports popped up before without any credibility. And finally, this image - at least IMO - looks more like a fighter with two different engines and not the same.
Oh you're right. I didn't bother reading the original Weibo post but that *is* what they seem to be implying. That would mean, if this is correct, July was a single engine test in Chengdu but they're already flying with two engines in Yanliang, which is just...Is the picture on the right from July though?
That is what the tweet seems to be implying.
That is to say, the original weibo post is talking about a J-20 powered by two WS-15s that's recently flown, while using a (newly released) picture from July showing the J-20 with one WS-15.

So I'm now way more confident there's probably a J-20 flying around with one WS-15, even if I don't yet know whether I believe there's already a J-20 flying around with two.Yeah I'm reserving judgement at this stage as well.. though I do think something significant has definitely happened wrt the progress of J-20's engines, but I think we have all learned to be cautious with engine rumours and to see clear irrefutable evidence for claims.
