Because that’s what the units that have the most experience flying the J-20 have.

Yeah sure let’s use air shows rather than production schedules as our mark of technological confidence.

If there is serious reliability concerns with the engine then it would never have been okayed for production. There are several preferences. They didn’t okay the WS-10 for J-10A. Then didn’t okay it for J-11B initially, and to this day they haven’t okayed the naval variant for the J-15. The idea that China would rush a engine into service for face saving reasons is preposterous.

The one elusive shot of the J-20 I haven't seen yet is one that has to be taken from the air is a high angle flying frontal shot close up at high resolution. There was a shot a couple years ago that came close only because the J-20 was upside down diving down from a loop and someone got a shot from the ground so you had to rotate the image 180 degrees but it wasn't high resolution.

Why did they choose to fly j-20 equipped with russian engines?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Could be any reason, really. Maybe since there were about 15+ J-20s in the parade, there wouldn't be enough WS-10 jets to do it. Maybe the pilots flying the Russian-engine jets are more experienced than the WS-10 jet pilots.
Possibly. Other reasons might be to reserve the newer WS-10X J-20s for training, or to send a show of solidarity with the Russians.

Besides, we know that the J-20s are being trialed either with WS-10XX with TVC or WS-15s. It is faintly possible that the J-20s will never use the WS-10X in bulk due to the apparently rapid maturity of the WS-15s.

The maturity of WS-10Xs are apparently a non-factor anyways. The J-20 went from interim Russian engines to interim Chinese engines thus far; it'd be more interesting to see them standardize on the finalized WS-15s than for the WS-10s to be produced in bulk.
