For me the real mystery is whether they started inducting WS-10 J-20s into the Wanghai Brigade. We know for a fact that the 621xx series of birds are still using the AL-31 variant, but the only 622xx bird -- 62207, has its nozzles strategically obscured in the only footage we have of it.

You mean 6210x series and 6220x series right?
Because of the ABxCx numbers, the C has to be a zero if it is to still refer to 9th brigade at Wuhu.

In any case, I agree that it's not impossible that some of the 6220x aircraft might be WS-10 powered.
I feel like there is a good chance that only some 30-40 production J-20s powered by Al-31s have been produced. Depending on what the specific number is, they might've only produced enough Al-31 powered J-20s to distribute between part of Dingxin, part of Cangzhou, and part of Wuhu.

Be more discerning with what sources you take seriously.

You're relatively new, so fine.

But whenever you read anything about the PLA on the internet -- and indeed, anything on the internet in general -- take five minutes to ask "is this real" and "how real is this" and then do some reading around the subject.

In this case, the original article is from SCMP and the author is Minnie Chan.

Unreliability of this article aside, i think full strength of each heavy fighter brigade is 24, not 36 airframes, right?
So 9th is almost at its full strength, and we should expect a 3rd unit soon if not in fact already.

Yes & no … as it seems with the latest reform from regiments to brigades finished, it seems as if several - if not all - brigades have a slightly larger complement of eventually 28-30 single seaters and 6-8 twin seater (for J-10 and J-11 units). Even more with the latest number wishing the 9th Brigade being 62207 or in fact no. 27 it is not unlikely that this unit has indeed 28-30 J-20s.

Soncerning a third unit I agree even if I don‘t think already now since for Anshan we know rumours since about late 2019 and for the next unit in fact I haven‘t heard anything.

It is really hard to find some clear article on this, maybe @Bltizo will provide more accurate information,

My googling have encountered lot of misunderstanding, contradictions and mistakes. Part of it seems to come from translating from chinese to english and back. For example the article mentions Wang Hai Brigade, but the chinese news actually call it a "dadui" which should translate to flight group.

The other thing is the number of planes per brigade, this is the impression i am getting from research please correct me if i got it wrong. Structure of a brigade goes brigade -> flight group -> flight squadron. Traditional brigade is structured at 3*3*4=36+4 spare =40 planes. For J20 it is not clear if a squadron size is 3 or 4 planes. 3 plane per squadron * 3 squadron per flight group would explain the 9 6200x we have been seeing for a long time. That would mean a brigade should have 3*3*3=27+3 spare(guessing) =30.

24 would mean a structure of 2*3*4, or other combination.

It seems like the currently evidence suggest the 9th brigade is fully upgraded while 1st brigade got their ist flight group.
