To be fair, at this point it really seems to be LM/F-35 problem, not necessarily larger US problem. Esp. after new GAO report.
It may sound highly ironic, but at this point, US tech level at large probably shouldn't be judged by F-35.

Um. If you follow the GAO report the F-35 isn’t the only program struggling.
Everything, but it's a interconnected (and intercontinental) clusterfuck.
Say, US already deploys fighter GaN radars. Just elsewhere, and not even in a high priority program. Just under different and more sensible management.

Also, keep in mind that the main radar has a lot of functionalities beside just scanning the other side. It should be the primary emitter for electronic attack and its receivers and filters can be use to pick up emissions from the other side. Same with data-linking and such. So, I wouldn't be too hang up on the search range.
Especially since given the prominence of J-16D in all these formation, it's likely that J-20A is invisible to enemy radar and turning on emissions would only give away its positioning to enemy ESM. They can save the active radar to the AWACS.

Has been for a long time. Last year at Zhuhai they reported that J-20S will be capable of air to air and air to surface missions as well as serve as control node for CCA. They have most likely already tested J-20S with the four large UAVs seen at the parade at Dingxin.
