CONFIRMED UNITS: 176th, 172nd, 9th (J-20 (I)) ... 1st, 172nd, 5th, 56th, 111th, 8th, 4th, 41st, 97th (J-20 (II))
unconfirmed highly likely: 55th, 19th
unconfirmed and questionable: 54th
rumours only: 131st, 2nd

As such we have:
9 confirmed operational units = 9 x 20-28 J-20 = 180-252 J-20
2 confirmed FTTB units (not the same number of aircraft) = maybe 2x 12 J-20 = 24 J-20
2 unconfirmed but likely units: 2x 20-28 J-20 = 40-56 J-20
= likely 244-332 J-20
2 rumoured units: 2x 20-28 J-20 = 40-56 J-20

Reading this more in detail I'm a little confused.

You list 11 confirmed units (172nd listed twice because it converted from J-20 (I) to J-20 (II) I think, 2 unconfirmed but highly likely, 1 unconfirmed and questionable, 2 rumors only. That makes a total of 16 units. You then list 11 confirmed units, 2 unconfirmed but likely, and 2 rumored. That's a total of 15 units. Where did the "unconfirmed and questionable" 54th AB go?

I have heard down the grapevine, that's all I can say. And there are other variations coming, probably not next year, maybe 2027.

J-20A is the “complete package” with WS-15, the hump, upgraded avionics/radar, and improved stealth. J-20S might enter service without WS-15 but will make use of many of the other advancements from J-20A. For instance, the ventral strakes on both variants are completely made of special material instead of special material within an aluminum or titanium frame.

Externally visible changes are WS-15s and the dorsal hump behind the cockpit. Much more is changed internally, of course.

Let me check again … We have:

CONFIRMED UNITS:
1. 176th … maybe gained later additional J-20 (II)
2. 172nd … gained later additional J-20 (II)
3. 9th (all J-20 (I))
4. 1st
5. 5th
6. 56th
7. 111th
8. 8th
9. 4th
10. 41st
11. 97th (all J-20 (II))

Then we have unconfirmed highly likely units:
12. 55th
13. 19th

… unconfirmed and questionable:
14. 54th (some reports claim it is now a J-16 unit)

… rumours only:
15. 131st
16. 2nd (more likely than 131st actually)


So yes, at all there are 16 units in this list, however I rate only 15 of them as confirmed and likely!
And similar, the 85th was also mentioned for some time (but in the end only used as a base when Wuhu was renovated), and also the 89th & 95th ABs were initially rumoured too but are now listed as likely (more likely) J-16 units.
