One thing I've noticed: AFAICT, the last confirmed Air Brigade that converted to the J-20 was the 97th in late 2023. There are rumors about further units converting this year, but no visual confirmation.

Could it be that 2024 saw a reduction in output due to modifications to the assembly line, paving the way for J-20A production in 2025?

Exactly my point ... not that I want to dismiss Orca's or @Alfa_Particle's claim, but IMO it makes no sense to fly several J-20A prototypes with the WS-15 and then return to yet another WS-10CXX (unless the WS-15 had some issues)
IIRC 2051 and 2055 both use WS-10CXX or at least not WS-15s, so it's not without precedence.

There must be a greater application to warrant WS-10CXX unless as @Deino said, WS-15 was having issues, no? Is it possible they may be retrofitted onto the existing J-20 fleet?

Three different Engines on one platform is absolutely nightmare logistically/production wise. this WS-10CXX is not a production engine because there were so many variants of WS-10 during research and development. only B and C variants went into full scale production. and H class for naval variant to some extent.

you might don't know, WS-15 is in LRIP stage since at least March 2023 as per official statement from AECC. LRIP stage means production engine.

There is. Assuming the rumour about the the WS-15's different mass flow rate this requiring intake geometry modifications to the J-20A compare to the J-20, the WS-10CXX could be re-engined to earlier J-20s.

Could just be test articles at the end of the day.

May be wishful thinking but I'm imagining WS-10CXX adopting some WS-15 materials allowing it to achieve higher MTBO than WS-10C or at least maintain it ;)

Sorry, me again ... in case I missed it, but where is this theory of a WS-10CXX from?
Here: Chinese Engine Development

Dunno if it adopts tech directly from WS-15, but it's significant enough for the PLAAF to test it with the J-20A/S.
