?? What does the weapons bay have anything to do with estimating length from those pictures?

the weapons bay are at the edges of the lex and the wing trailing edge extensions booms are beside the engine nozzles thus the wing is not that big

Pretty much now I an start to see why the article says it has small wings 25% smaller than F-22

Uh, why don't you actually *measure* the wing area instead of peddling this euphemistic nonsense.

And that is how the US ends up underestimating its potential adversaries...

You misunderstand. When the United States comes out with a new fighter, it shills for the aircraft and downplays the capabilities of its rivals. That's for two reasons, to sell the new aircraft and to reinforce America as the preeminent security partner.

It's only when the US is preparing to get its partners to upgrade to a next generation of aircraft does the United States start praising foreign rivals. The Su-27 line, arguably, is superior to the F-15 line in terms of maneuverability, although not radar or range. Praise for the Su-27 did not come out until it was time to start selling the F-35 or the latest F-15 / F-16 upgrades.

The J-20 will only be realistically assessed once the F-X and F/A-XX projects are announced, and once all the F-35 contracts are completed. Then American media will extol the latest and greatest and how Chinese competition has rendered the F-35 obsolete, and when the latest exports are announced, the Chinese successor to the J-20 will be downplayed.

Rest assured that the professionals, the people with their lives on the line, instead of the propagandists and marketing managers, take the J-20 seriously.

I'm pretty plugged into think tank world, and I do not think it looks nearly as calculated as you're presenting it to be.

So the J-20 is about the same size as, even slightly smaller than, the Flankers. I guess its length can no longer be used to argue its supposedly "poor" aerodynamic performance...

The myth that "it's so long that it has to be an interceptor" is officially bebunked.

Guess the next thing is the wing surface area... since it is now easily measured, this myth should be debunked shortly.

the wing is small the cut of the wing beside the Su-27 can be seen clearly corresponds to the view you get from bellow showing it has a small wing, well you did not want to accept and you counted fuselage for wing forgetting the limits it really has counting fuselage for wing

I don't think you can say that. The two types of wings have completely different shapes. You cannot eyeball the size the wings. You need to measure the surface area.

it has small wings great part of the lift is generated by the canards and a forward fuselage, it is designed to be relatively low drag because of the very large frontal cross section, it is not so bad in terms of drag, i think they wanted to reduce drag a lot specially since the widest part of the wing is at the end of the fuselage.

In my opinion this aircraft start looking more like an interceptor that with the aid of decent missile and stealth will be an air superiority, but to be honest i do not think will be so agile at least compared to F-22, Su-35, Rafale, but i think it is better than F-35 by a very small margin.

In my opinion this aircraft is an interceptor interdictor, do not misunderstand it must be quiet effective with good missiles, but it is not a true dogfighter

Ah yes, it's an interceptor because you refuse to actually measure the wing area.

Do you even know how wing area is measured?
