If we didn’t already have some evidence independent of the interview I’d probably have concluded he was just having a bit of fun.

I've seen the same cartoon, and it's highly probable that TVC is being tested on a J-20 somewhere. However, strictly focusing on the interaction between Mr. Yang and the reporter, I think Yang very deliberately didn't give anything away. Of course, maybe the whole incident was a setup, with the reporter being fed the question beforehand by the powers that be, all done to create some excitement among enthusiasts over a non-denial denial (i.e. sly confirmation with plausible deniability). Who knows, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter, because J-20 with TVC is definitely in the works.

No, we *think* there’s one 201X or 210X with one AL-31 and one WS-10 with TVC undergoing testing right now, based on cartoons from someone who has proven to be a reliable source in previous instances. We do not yet have visual confirmation of that fact.

I am pretty sure a photo exists and have seen one

He *has* said before that he follows the discussions on military forums, so I definitely feel like regardless of whether he’s hinting at anything he’s deliberately toying with us all.

I edited my last comment, which didn't go live before your reply to it. But yeah, I agree. In my edit, I expressed that in the grand scheme of things, this little trolling incident doesn't matter, because J-20 with TVC is definitely in the works.

I don't think Mr. Yang Wei would've gone out of his way to respond to the reporter's first comment, and certainly not in the manner that he did, if the J-20 didn't have TVC engines.

He could've simply responded by explaining how TVC notionally could've helped the J-20. Instead, he focused on the reporter's assumption that the J-20 has not currently been equipped with TVC and chose to challenge that.

J-20s in conservative flying display over Zhuhai

The Chengdu J-20 appeared in this year’s flying display at Airshow China, performing a conservative flying routine.

The show started with a three aircraft flyby, after which two aircraft performed a series of sweeping turns in tight formation. A solo aircraft also performed a series of rolls and a sharp climb before climbing out of the show and departing.

While the performance highlighted the type’s large size, there was a lack of aggressive maneuvers, such as the falling leaf and tight vertical loops. At air shows, such maneuvers are routine for the types to which the J-20 is most often compared, the Lockheed Martin F-22, and the Sukhoi Su-35.

Still, the J-20 performance was a few minutes longer than at the 2016 show, where two aircraft made a pass over the crowd. One aircraft then departed, leaving its partner to conduct a few turns before climbing out of the show.

For the first time, AVIC distributed a flyer with a very brief description of the aircraft: “The J-20 developed independently by China is a heavy stealth fourth-generation fighter (aka fifth generation internationally), renowned for its dominant role of medium & long range air combat and excellent capability in ground & marine precision strike,” it states.

“Its overall combat effectiveness marks significant improvement compared with that of third-generation fighters. Major operational missions include: seizing and maintaining air superiority, medium & long-range fast interception, escort and deep strike.”

Joining the dots, speculatively, TVC has been tested on some prototypes of J-20, because WS-15 is arriving soon, with abundance of power to back up TVC maneuvering.

Outstanding my boy, the SDF "post of the Day!" wonder how our old Buddy the Engineer is, or should I say, where is he? he'd love this? (prolly want to argue with us?), what I really wonder is what he thinks about the J-10s OVT??

Just remember, the slower you go, the harder it all has to work, these vapor vortices are like our own little wind tunnel, you see whats working, and HOW hard its working, its magic baby! as you watch the video and observe the control surfaces, you develop and even greater appreciation of the FCS, even better than blue smoke!
Yang Wei is definitely messing with the reporter right now.

Speaking of wing condensate. Does anyone remember how MIG-29 used to say that the J-20 isn't maneuverable because it can't generate as much vapors as other planes? I guess even he needs to roll back on that claim now.

Yep, that's for sure, said the same thing about F-35, but both of these aircraft have recently had their performance envelope's "opened up", the age of the electric jet is here, dialing them in is a big deal...

both these aircraft have proven that OVT is not really necessary for outstanding maneuverability, its for certain that the J-20 has shown us we're on "Vapor Cougar"! She's "blowin smoke" in an awesome way, beautiful pictures, video's, as I stated a couple of weeks ago, the Chinese were gonna put on the dog, and they brought it big time!
