To coat a surface with meta-material, you'll need to print it on which I doubt can be done a complex 3D surface like a plane.
even if you can the meta-material will be a large obstacle to airflow.
You won't able to apply a coat of paint on it either since meta-material is based on a complex 3D structure matrix in which the paint will just fill in any cavities on the surface making the meta-material surface useless.

Oh, I have no doubt that metamaterials are currently in development for stealth fighter applications. What is unfounded is the claim that UHF-specific metamaterials are already in service with the J-20.

Read back at that news and links posted in this very thread. It is spread over a couple of articles, first ones from western media that picked up on new Chinese patents for metamaterials designed to counter UHF, and then more circumstance Chinese reports on a new special material going into mass production and being used on a new fighter.

What was the supposed nonsensical Chinese propaganda? I notice how anything these west loving guys find out about China being ahead of them in any way e.g. patents and science research in particular fields, they absolutely must rubbish it immediately so they can feel a little bit better. It's like their existence is at threat by any progress made in another non-western nation. They forget history and how they were the backwater of humanity for most of human history. Oh dear... he'll run off to complain to the authorities now :p

But i'm curious... was the "nonsensical Chinese propaganda" from the wumao troll army in reference to the metamaterials? Hahahaha Rafale has sweet F all in 5th gen technologies so J-20 having an advanced skin is heresy and must be Chinese propaganda. Those bloody asians making things up again.

If 3D metamaterials were used, the layer thickness would need to be in the order of RF wavelength. I doubt it would be applied to large area due to weight penalty, it would be strategically applied on areas such as LERX, canards edges and gap, wing edge ...etc. Incidentally those area's are painted grey as well...
