>> China’s new stealth jet just entered service — and it exposes a huge weakness for the US . .

((By: ALEX LOCKIE))

Just six years after China’s Chengdu J-20 strike aircraft made its first flight, the innovative new jet has entered into service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force — and it exposes weaknesses in the US military in more ways than one.

On the surface, China’s quick turnaround on the J-20 and other defense projects outpaces the US, where the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, first flown in 2006, still struggles to meet operational requirements in its naval variant.

The J-20, which bears some resemblance to the US F-22, also raises questions about the extent to which China has been able to steal US military secrets.

Furthermore, China built the J-20 specifically to counter a weak point in the US Air Force — unarmed aerial refuelers and airborne early warning and control aircraft.

A senior scientist working on stealth programs told Business Insider the J-20′s stealth isn’t all aspect or nearly as effective as its US counterparts. However, the J-20′s stealth on the front end and extremely long-range missiles make it ideal for knocking back US support planes and keeping the US Air Force away from the battle.

The twin-engine fighter, built by Chengdu Aerospace Corp. for the People’s Liberation Army’s air force, first flew in 2011 and made its public debut in November when the PLAAF showed off two of the aircraft at an airshow over coastal city Zhuhai.

Also in the fall, China downplayed reports that the J-20 was spotted at the Daocheng Yading Airport near Tibet or that it may be deployed near the Indian border.

With a reported top speed of 1,300 miles per hour and the ability to carry short- and long-range air-to-air missiles, the jet is often compared to the twin-engine F-22 Raptor, a fifth-generation stealth fighter made by Lockheed Martin Corp. for the U.S. Air Force.

To look at current US/Western assets, as compared to potential of-force in the region and then to conclude that the USAF has weaknesses in comparison, must be some kind of "new math". I'd suggest you do the math again??? HEH! Heh!

I can assure we can and will aggressively defend our tankers and AWAKs aircraft, it really should be too difficult, and I can assure you that assets are in place and equipped to do just that???

So why is the claim that the J-20 is already on WS-15? Or is the SCMP just full of shit?

Perhaps today's article can provide some insight on when domestic engine will be ready

Stealth fighter soon powered by local engines
China Daily, March 13, 2017

A domestically developed engine will soon power the nation's latest stealth fighter jet, according to a senior scientist working for Aero Engine Corp of China.

"It will not take a long time for our fifth-generation combat plane to have China-made engines," said Chen Xiangbao, vice-president of the AECC Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials. Chen, also a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was referring to the J-20 stealth fighter.

"The engine's development is proceeding well. We also have begun to design a next-generation aviation engine with a thrust-to-weight ratio that is much higher than that of current types," he said. Thrust-to-weight ratio is considered the top indicator of an aviation engine's capability.

Chen, who is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, spoke to China Daily on the sidelines of the political advisory body's annual session.

The People's Liberation Army Air Force recently confirmed, without elaborating, that the J-20 has been put into active service. Aviation industry observers said the plane is still equipped with Russian-made engines due to the lack of a suitable domestically developed engine.

Chen said Chinese scientists and engineers are striving to catch up to the world's top players in terms of research and development into cutting-edge aviation engines, but the country still has a long way to go before it can develop and produce world-class engines, Chen said.

"For instance, we are able to develop the two most important components in an advanced engine — the single crystal superalloy turbine blades and powder metallurgy superalloy turbine disks — but in mass production, the products' quality is not very satisfactory," he said. It is a matter of time and persistence to make reliable engines, he said.

"The road to success is filled with setbacks and failures. Each of the world's engine powers has walked this road," Chen added.

Yin Zeyong, head of AECC's science and technology commission, previously said that a good engine is the result of not only good design but also time-consuming experiments and tests.

Despite China's tremendous achievements in science, technology and manufacturing industries over the past several decades, aircraft engine-making remains one of the few fields in which the country still lags behind top players like the United States and Russia. Because of the sophistication of advanced aircraft engines, such as the afterburning turbofan engine, which drives the US Lockheed Martin F-22 and Russia's Sukhoi Su-35, only the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have the technical wherewithal to develop and produce them.

Tang Changhong, chief designer of China's Y-20 strategic transport plane and a member of the CPPCC National Committee, told West China City Daily that the Y-20 will be equipped with indigenously developed engines around 2018 or 2019.

scmp are indeed sometimes quite unreliable, and sometimes have a bad habit of sensationalizing both positive and negative developments, or sometimes misreading official statements entirely whichseems to have been the case this time

Well "weakness" in as much as any air force has tankers and early warning aircraft that can be targeted for destruction. I have no doubt they will be well-protected, but certainly they will not be impervious to attack, and somewhere in between "vulnerable" and "impervious" is where the J-20 comes in.

well, it would have to be a local engine at some point since the Russians don't have a better option available. So most likely WS-10B or WS-10IPE.
