I would think that the definition of 6th gen is DEW; i.e, there are lasers on the aircraft, or the AESA is so powerful that it can hardkill incoming missiles with EM radiation. The trend, anyways, is towards invulnerable, not invisible.

The US will no doubt lead on the 5.5 to 6 Gen leap, USAF's latest statements indicate they will use existing equipment, and technology to make the leap, the Ford and the F-35 have illustrated far to well what happens when you "overreach" your equipment and abilities.

You end up spending so much more if you are developing each new technology to its limit? instead we need to integrate existing "airframe technology with the cutting edge avionics, while at the same time simplifying the whole process!

just 6 years...from start to production units....not bad!!!
