Seems high but still plausible. Of course, question is over what time period? 10 or 15 years? and having 24 singleseater j20a per regiment seems a lot. Most air forces have been downsizing their squadrons when it comes to new planes. I would half expect plaaf to operate 18 or 20 ship j20 regiments.

I'd bet they go full on with the J-20, seeing that both Japan and South Korea are going to be building/buying F-35s.

Rumor says PLAAF placed order of 360 J-20As for 15 rejiments.

I hope they do, that will encentivise the Trump administration to role into the 5.5 to 6 generation aircraft, which will likely be Lockheed, Boeing, or Northrup's design, and I would imagine we will build at least 500 to 700 of those!

Thanks AFB for your most informative response.

Rather people with knowledge don't ask or post blatant questions or remarks while trying to hide it a legitimate sentence when deep down (consistently from your history) as to trying to troll without getting caught.o_O

That would be wonderful. It finally would give China the incentive to then build not less than 2,000 7th gen fighters, designed with the world's best supercomputers. ;)

HEH!! Heh!, really, oh wow!! I'm serious, and I have advocated for an F-22 upgrade or restart for some time, if Trump really does decided the F-35 isn't good enough, the Raptor will very likely come back! I really do imagine that China will want at least some parity in numbers, and I'm all for it! Having parity has kept everybody from doing something really stupid for the last 60 years!

Bill Clinton's friends at Loral put China in the Super-computer business in the 90's, in exchange for political favors, one of the first scandals of the Clinton Presidency?? as a matter of fact.

But I really do see China as investing rather heavily into the J-20, as it offers them a unique capability, and I also see them likely moving to produce an indigenous SU-35 equivalent, possibly with OVT??? in light of their recent purchase of the SU-35?

looks 360 sounds a little high, but it'd doable. The completing in 6 years with 80 per year is complete nonsense. Just look at where j-10B/C production rate is at right now and that's after more than a decade in service.

If Trump would decide that F-35 isn't good enough and the program is to be truncated and then says a new aircraft is to be designed and build he will only see a prototype in his second term. And he can hardly decide that until then only F-18 and/or F-15 derivatives will be built. So yes, you are then likely to get more F-22's. Even so modernizing the F-22 - new electronics, major savings on maintenance - will take several years before production will restart. Even then F-35's will continue to be build at some rate.

Let's stay away from politics. By the way, the theory that Bill Clinton somehow enabled China gain access to advanced technology that it couldn't develop on its own or purchase from other countries is quite misguided.

@tphuang: the difference between the J-10s and J-20 is that the J-10s are obsolete in a world of 5th gen aircraft. They're mostly usable for providing credible deterrence against neighbors, but are useless against the United States. The J-20, on the other hand, is 5th gen, and is arguably competitive with the F-35. With the right subsystems, the Chinese could put enough J-20s into the sky to deny the Americans air superiority over its region. You can't do that with the J-10.

I didn't say they didn't "pay for it", in fact they did, but Bill Clinton allowed those technology transfers through the commerce dept as opposed to the state dept....

So he circumvented the normal "security concerns", and yes lots of money changed hands, I personally, and I would imagine Jeff, BD consider it as a "sell out"!

sorry for the off topic, we all buy technology, and we should, I'm not blaming China or being critical of China. I have been and will continue to be a big fan of the J-20, and the Chinese aerospace industry in general, they have come a long way in a very short period, and no doubt it has been a lot of hard work.
