Shouldn't 2001 and 2002 be mothballed by now? After all, there are a number of differences between them and the production version.

No Sir, I do not believe they will be taken off of flight status until there are sufficient number of aircraft to finish up developmental flight testing. Two things drive my "opinion".

1. This is a completely new aircraft, absolutely a clean sheet, though possibly borrowing some design elements from existing aircraft.

2. The proof of concept demonstrators remain substantially the same aerodynamically and engine wise, as the LRIP birds that are a building now. They have more inherent value in "flying off" hours and building developmental time on the J-20 overall, than they do as some type of "historical marker", although I am in total agreement that they are "historic". I can assure you they will not be parked outside on some gate, and it would not surprise me what-so-ever that they become the foundation of a museum collection some day!

I think he meant to say by the end of 2016??? We really only know of 9-10 flying prototypes???? 2102 is still a question mark, that would allow another 4 from the next batch by the end of the year?
I am inclined to go with Deino's version regarding the 14 as in existence. IMO if it is true, then the number of LRIP's produced (whether 4 - 6) so far in 2016 is impressive in terms of production capability.
It begs a number of broader questions but I will reserve them for some other day.

That's why I put a question mark on my post, and Deino is very seldom wrong, I am hoping the unmarked bird is 2102, so the next four in a batch could roll out any time, it is about time.

IIRC, YF-22 kept flying and doing various tests even after F-22 achieved IOC. So not surprised if 2001 and 2002 are still rolling.

That's right, and we have a test and eval squadron at Edward's AFB who continue to fly and test the F-22, I can't but imagine that the J-20 will follow a similar protocol. Even Russia has brought all the 1st Gen, PAK-FA back up to flight status, though no doubt they are far behind their projections, and lost 055 to fire, just as we lost an F-35A.

No, his wording was quite specific: "More LRIP

s are being built in 2016, at least 14 by July 2016"

Whether it's 14 J-20s in total (8 prototypes, 6 LRIP as Deino said), or 14 J-20 LRIP airframes (which I find doubtful), either way it is meant to be referring to the situation as of July 2016.

Or maybe it means 14 J-20 LRIPs are in the process of being built as of July 2016... who knows.

@huitong, we'd appreciate clarification.

Time to reminisce and flashback. First flight 2011 started with bunch of busses congregating at Chengdu airport. We are now at the gate of IOC Who would have guessed? Gen He Weirong is right on the button He predict 2017-2018 IOC.
Of course she is a beaut and using cutting edge technology

Skywalker just publish J20 article on his blog

It is the smoothest program sofar. No mishap, NO accident. No snafu. I guess they learn their lesson from J 10 program and of course the base industry has improve beyond anybody wildest expectation.

Douglas Barrie, an aerospace expert at the International Institute of Strategic Studies, noted that the J20's airframe resembled that of an abandoned Russian prototype, the MiG 1.42.

"I'm not sure that its even much of an impressive airframe," said Richard Aboulafia, another analyst. "It looks like something that might have been designed in 1985."

For the most part, China's combat aircraft programme has lagged behind its competitors in the west and Russia.

China's fourth-generation combat jet, the J-10, appeared in 2006 – but experts say it compares with western aircraft that went into production two decades ago. Beijing has also struggled to develop the Shenyang J-15 carrier-borne jet, reverse-engineered from the Russian-made Sukhoi 33.

China's fifth-generation fighter programme, experts say, faces several critical challenges as it moves forward from prototype stage to actual production.

For example, Chinese avionics – the software-controlled electronic systems which gave modern combat jets their cutting-edge mission capabilities – are believed to be a generation behind their US, European, Israeli and Russian counterparts.

What is the meaning of IOC according to Gen He? Is it a term that the Chinese military actually uses?

I believe that the original words used were merely "enter service" rather than "IOC" -- but that interview I think was in 2009, so my memory might be a bit faulty.

I think over the years it has been interpreted and assumed by some people that it would be the Chinese military equivalent of IOC, though we obviously do not know what that explicitly constitutes.

edit: also, the original date mentioned back in the 2009 interview was "8-10 years" -- i.e.: 2017-2019, not 2017-2018.
