Yes ... and they may have to sacrifice the range by reducing the fuel on board to compensate less thrust or perhaps carry less weapons

Is it possible to replace the "old" engine (e.g AL-31) later on to the newer and more powerful WS-15?

Yes, in fact my contention is that the J-20 was designed and sized for the WS-15, and has been adapted through reworked inlets and reshaped nozzle area to opitimize for the Al-31FN until the WS-15 comes along, I believe that this is a small batch of LRIP birds and that there will likely be another batch or three or four in similar numbers, seems somewhat similar to J-15s.

So yes, we are in LRIP, these aircraft will all be designated "test articles", yes we may have an IOC of a small squadron of the "test articles in 2015, aerodynamics, avionics, and weapons will all come now. Given the likely tremendous tankage of the J-20, no doubt fuel loads will be reduced, but I would remind all that with inflight refueling, they could top up at altitude, and it wouldn't really surprise me to see them attempt some long distance speed records with this aircraft. I think it will be fast even with the AL-31Fs????

having said all of that, I'm not saying you can't create a FTTC regiment to start developing tactics and really test out flight envelopes and such. But without the right engine, it would be hard to achieve some of the design requirements.

Since that China has threatened to throw wall climbers into prison, I believe that all the photo's coming out of China these days will be Photoshops. Even if you can get away with taking the photo's they will find you through your IP adress when you post the photos online! I'm sure its a lot of fun for people to take photo's of military equipment and then putting them online but not at the expense of going to jail!

We haven't seen any J-10B photo's recently coming out of Chengdu so what makes you guys think that these J-20 photo's are real ?

It's less likely for a photo to be PS if you can't find the original that it was manipulated from for one. Second, there are certain details that are difficult to PS. For example, it's easier to convincingly PS the numbers on the nose if the digits are 1, 2, or 0, but not a 3 or 5 because of the unique font. The photo that Assassin's Mace shared has a clearly doctored 5, while the first pic of 2015 at least seems to have a 5 that's authentic (but pixelation is an issue).

We do not need to guess anymore,
cuz she took off at 14:05 yesterday afternoon!
I used to believe that 2013 would be the last prototype of this year. Underestimating the insanity of AVIC, how naive I was…
The first PAK-FA was 1 year earlier than 2001, but now the 6th PAK-FA is still in assembly while the 6th J-20 enjoying her virgin flight.

Any link regarding 2015 took off 14:05 ?

I would be very surprised if PAK-FA ready (in service) earlier than J-20. In fact I am not too sure whether PAK-FA would be successful ... Russia is in trouble now financially

PAK-FA have had some trouble in structure in test flights. As almost the entire axis is tunneled for weapon cavity, the structural strength is surely weakened. Let's see how Russians solve that with... mere hope.

Chinese netizens sometimes call PAK-FA "扁-27", meas "Flattened-27".
