China's counterpart might have deep pockets but the Pentagon still spends five times as much every year.

Nothing quite like American Exceptionalism is there Master Delft, yes we have made an investment in FREEDOM, and on Memorial Day, it is only appropriate to remind all of the Sino Defense readers that most intelligent US citizens, love and respect our neighbors and family who put it ALL on the line everyday to defend our freedom. We love them because they have earned our "trust", we love them because they "volunteer", there are NO CONSCRIPTS in the US military, and yes they do believe in freedom, and yes they are honorable, and I love and respect each and every one who have sworn to defend and protect the US Constitution.

Master Delft, I would remind you sir that the Pentagon does not spend the money, the US taxpayer does, and continues to elect representative government that heeds most of our wishes regarding the defense of our great nation.....

and I'm NOT putting anybody else down, I am defending my US military, that defends my FREEDOM, and yes today is MEMORIAL DAY when we honor those selfless heroes, who have laid down their life for their friends and freedom!

In closing our Chinese friends will have to make a similar investment if they wish to field the J-20, fifth gen is expensive, and we really have NO idea how much the Chinese have spent to date on the J-20 do we????

Let me say though Delft, I do agree with you a great deal more than you realize, check out the F-35 thread, I believe it was bd popeye who took me aside and "educated me" to what a fine and upstanding gentleman you are sir, thanks for being here with us on the Sino Defense forum, and to all my beloved brothers here, your friendship is one of the great treasures and joys of my life, I love each and every one of you, and value each of your opinions and perspectives, even if our politics may differ, I "want, to know" who you are, and where you are coming from. So peace brothers, and cheers on this beautifull day, I hold you in highest regard, and think that I would welcome each of you in my home if the need were to arise. brat

MiG-29 is happily bitter.

About the 701; best data until Paralay dug up his pics suggested that it was a canard-lerx-delta. Now there's ambiguity as to whether or not it is a canard-lerx-delta or just a lerx-delta; both it and the MiG 1.44 were supposedly descended from a canard-delta, however.

If the J-20 is going to be fast-tracked with Al-31, how long do you think it'll take going from the first few prototypes to LRIP / IOC?

Can Beijing get their J-20s up in the air before the US equips F-35s in the region?

Is the US planning an attack on China? If not there's no rush for China.

If the US executes Air-Sea Battle, which calls for strikes deep inside China, then war will follow.

That's war to begin with and China didn't start it. If it's as easy as it sounds why don't they attack China now? Because there's consequences that no Air-Sea battle can defend against.

You are both correct.

Is the US planning an attack on China? If not there's no rush for China.

Here by planning you mean intention to attack.

Well, there's something called Air-Sea Battle.

Here you mean a method/strategy for war against China.

The US has no intention of going to war with China, but of course it has a plan in place in case it is needed. It is the same for every nation - China has a strategy to counter a US attack, it doesn't mean it intends to go to war with the US.

On topic: I think the F35 being deployed and operational in the western pacific will happen around the same time as the J-20 comes online - but the F35 will initially be in bigger numbers and achieve mature operational readiness earlier.

For the J-20, 2018 would be an 'on track' estimate, while 2020 would be conservative - it will be heavily influenced by the progress of the engine development program.

Air Sea Battle is a strategy the US is developing to counter Area Denial strategies China and other nations have.

This does not meant he US wants to...or is planning to attack China. It just has plans on how to go about fighting in certain scenarios if it ever has to.

Of course, if Air Sea Battle is really implemented against China then there would be war. But, then again, it would likely not ever be implemented unless war has already started.

All nations develop and update contingency plans for almost ever scenario conceivable. They do this so they have plans in place should something occur that requires their use, so they do not have to try and respond without a well thought out plan.
