MiG-29 is happily bitter.
About the 701; best data until Paralay dug up his pics suggested that it was a canard-lerx-delta. Now there's ambiguity as to whether or not it is a canard-lerx-delta or just a lerx-delta; both it and the MiG 1.44 were supposedly descended from a canard-delta, however.
If the J-20 is going to be fast-tracked with Al-31, how long do you think it'll take going from the first few prototypes to LRIP / IOC?
Can Beijing get their J-20s up in the air before the US equips F-35s in the region?
DoD has been scrambling to cut every other program to squeeze out money for the F35. Also depends if our "allies" will buy as many F35 as initially planned; in order to decrease the cost per unit.
I hate the fact the A10 is being dropped in order to divert funds to the F35, but thats another story for a different thread.
While Beijing's version of the DoD; not sure what they're called.. has access to deep pockets
My guess is that Beijing can throw enough money at the project to get the J20 out on time; what ever date that may be.
But they lack the required support infrastructure in place to fully utilize it. eg: AWACS, refueling tankers, bases in other countries around the Pacific, command control structure that can co-ordinate movements/action with other units within the air force/army/navy etc. All this take a long to to build out and make efficient. We've been at it for decades longer than they have.
I know China's current leader has been calling for a streamlining and modernization within the military to make it more efficient as fast reacting. I don't know how well that is being received by their current military hierarchy (no one that's been at a job for xyz number of years wants to be told they have to start doing things differently).
Much remains to be seen
If both were LRIP, and all other things being equal, I would put my money on the J20.
I have a feeling the F35 is going to be the air force's Bradley fighting vehicle
