There is a bunch of pictures one can easily search that look more believable to be project 701 than the picture above.

They either don't feature canards or, in the case of a model with canards, have compound delta wings instead of LERXs.

Huitong reports rumors that the 2012 and 2013 are under construction. If feels like it was yesterday when people were skeptical when two J-10s were seen flying together in a picture.

Yes, that's me ... but if You look a bit further from my - or shall I say our - special friend "MiG-23MLD" aka MiG-29, aka .... so You learn everything about me ! Anyway it seems at least he has found a new playground.;)

MiG-29 is happily bitter.

About the 701; best data until Paralay dug up his pics suggested that it was a canard-lerx-delta. Now there's ambiguity as to whether or not it is a canard-lerx-delta or just a lerx-delta; both it and the MiG 1.44 were supposedly descended from a canard-delta, however.

If the J-20 is going to be fast-tracked with Al-31, how long do you think it'll take going from the first few prototypes to LRIP / IOC?

Can Beijing get their J-20s up in the air before the US equips F-35s in the region?

DoD has been scrambling to cut every other program to squeeze out money for the F35. Also depends if our "allies" will buy as many F35 as initially planned; in order to decrease the cost per unit.
I hate the fact the A10 is being dropped in order to divert funds to the F35, but thats another story for a different thread.

While Beijing's version of the DoD; not sure what they're called.. has access to deep pockets

My guess is that Beijing can throw enough money at the project to get the J20 out on time; what ever date that may be.
But they lack the required support infrastructure in place to fully utilize it. eg: AWACS, refueling tankers, bases in other countries around the Pacific, command control structure that can co-ordinate movements/action with other units within the air force/army/navy etc. All this take a long to to build out and make efficient. We've been at it for decades longer than they have.
I know China's current leader has been calling for a streamlining and modernization within the military to make it more efficient as fast reacting. I don't know how well that is being received by their current military hierarchy (no one that's been at a job for xyz number of years wants to be told they have to start doing things differently).
Much remains to be seen

If both were LRIP, and all other things being equal, I would put my money on the J20.

I have a feeling the F35 is going to be the air force's Bradley fighting vehicle :p

Deino

Deino, I know you are a teacher, and you as well as I reached out to Mig, but he rejected our honest feelings of care and concern, and he rejected us personally, and that hurts. For him to besmirch your good name and honorable intentions is wholly uncalled for. We all love and respect you, and admire your ability to glean so much from a mere blurry photograph, I admire your kindness and generosity as well. As our last "critic" illustrated, its easy to "plagiarise" others in order to have the appearance of intelligence, but you are always found out by those who really do understand the subject at hand, whether aerodynamics or weapons, or naval vessels. Sorry that he continues to "harass" you, but small dogs are always the "biters"......

now back on topic,,,,,, where is 2011, come Chengdu, Deino still has that Bag Packed, book him on a flight, and let him do a professional job of introducing your lady to the world of Aviation! I know you are listening, hope you'll take the fine advise of the Air Force Brat, and allow this fine student of aviation to give your girl the proper-introduction to the world. most respectfully, Air Force Brat

As to your last two questions,,,,,

2018-2020 would be a "conservative guestimate,,,,,,

No, would be the answer to the last question, as all those Air Forces , Navy, Marines, and USAF have aircraft in the LRIP stage and "operationally coded" so the J-20 will be playing "catch up", but they have time to learn some lessons that may help them in the long run?????
