Why won't CAC just use WS-10a engine's with a stealthy nozzle purposely build for the J-20?

The WS-10A is made by SAC and is probably supply constrained. In addition, reliability concerns may still be a factor, not necessarily in terms of the actual quality of the engine, but in the event of unpredictable or unforeseen problems (this may sound counter intuitive, but even when you're sure you've sorted through all the problems of a product you may want to collect statistics over a long time period to make sure you've got all your bases covered). Furthermore, CAC has very strong relations with Salyut, which may have its own benefits (like the rumour that the J-20's using uprated engines for testing). Besides, given that China does its own maintenance on AL-31s, nothing stops them from installing their own nozzles on those just as easily as they could on WS-10s.

They are doing it now.

When, where on what type of aircraft ???

So far the ONLY - and here we need to listen very carefully, the ONLY one - aircraft I know currently being powered by a WS-10 is the single J-10B prototype numbered '1035' ... all other aircraft produced by CAC in recent years (excluding the J-7-family members) use a version of the Salyut AL-31FN.

As such if You know more and maybe even have proof for a second aircraft I'm eager to learn.

Wait patiently. I bet they will make this plane take off before lunar new year so that they can enjoy the long deserved holiday. Then you can have more info.

I agree with and even if patience is surely not my best virtue I will wait. However all facts so far speak against this option and I would say there's not even the smallest chance that '2011' will be powered by a WS-10-version.

But You are correct, let's wait and see ...

My personal opinion is that we won't see any major change to the engine nozzle until WS-15 is ready. Implementing thrust vectored nozzles reduces engine thrust, and losing more thrust is not an option when the J-20 is still using 4th generation engines. Song Weng Cong's paper mentioned that achieving super cruise and good maneuverability is without decent engines is one of the design objectives.

What constitutes a 5th generation aircraft is focused around many points, aimed at achieving first detect first lock first kill

Two of those are the ability to super cruise and stealth (IR reduction from engine) , AL-31 and WS10 can do neither so that’s why I believe J20 Power Plant for production units will not be one of these engines so why change from Al-31 to WS10 on this 3rd prototype? What’s it going to achieve if anything better sticking to Al-31 since it’s a test aircraft too many new things don’t work well together Makes no sense other than fan boys getting carried away

So I would be not surprised to see Russian engine powering the new J20 prototype

So, in other words...you do not have any of the proof or documentation regarding when it was done, where it was done, and to what aircraft that Deino asked you for.

Too bad. When you so definitively said, "They are doing it now," back a few posts, I was hoping for something a little more substantive than, "wait patiently."

At this point, I have to agree with Deino. I believe there is little chance that the 2011 aircraft will have a WS-10 engine. If proven wrong, I will be the first to admit it.

Another photo of 2011 from Weibo
Kind of suspicious since the grass lawn are too green for this season
