My belief is that the change has nothing to do with aerodynamics or low observability. The original design had the edges taper in an acute angle. The material thins out as it gets close to the tip, making the structure weak near the tip. Also, stress tends to build up where there is a sharp angle. I wouldn't be surprised if the engineers had found cracks at the tip and decided to chamfer the corner for less hassle. It is a sound engineering decision.

It's supposed to be the 2001, so the tails aren't supposed to be clipped. Now yes, it does appear that only parts of the plane is white-ish.

So the clipping would still affect RCS and aerodynamics even if they weren't the reasons for it. Might they eventually clip the older models too, just to keep things consistent between them for testing?

Or would they just leave them as is, and focus on using them to test other things, (like a new paint job apparently, or avionics), and leave further RCS and aerodynamics testing to the newer prototypes with the clippings?

doubt you'd ever know it from the cockpit, and no they wouldn't clip it unless it caused a poor flight characteristic, I am anxious to see where this all goes, as the Eng said it could possibly be a fix for some concerns???? in which case they might change it????

If the J-20 uses new composite/alloys/RAM in the tails (as opposed to materials CAC is more experienced with) and those materials behaved differently than expected, that change certainly makes sense.

The rumoured 20xx with a jump in numbering?

Well, its been almost a year for the new government, and I was expecting 2003 to be rolled out early last spring, of course that didn't happen, but lots of external things have happened, so???? I believe that the new ADIZ will once again lift the fortunes of the J-20, with Japan and South Korea choosing to purchase the F-35, that will make this airplane THE most likely to succeed, particularly with her "snarky" unique planform, (does kinda look like a dragon). She certainly has an edge in that arena, if China chooses to counter Japan and South Korean technology upgrades in the fighter field the only other candidate is the J-31, which is likely still a "technology demonstrator".. I think China has definitely taken a step back into the shadows, "tease" is more like "freeze" to me???? Now Xi is for certain engaging world leaders, and his own military, and doing an outstanding job on the PR front, but it also seems that he has "cloaked" some of China's more interesting projects from a Sino Defense perspective????? Well, maybe 20xx will roll out this spring????
