The reason I called the statement self contradictory is that by having no guarantee of anything, there is no guarantee that there will be delay. Hence, an expectation of a delay isn't reasonable when there is no evidence to base that expectation on.

If we go by the record of Chinese civilian aviation projects, J-10 should be a flop too. Heck, even when going by the record of Chinese military aviation projects, J-10 should also be a flop. The fact that J-10 is a success illustrates there is little to no correlation between projects.

People keep mentioning about past record, but the WS-10 is the first and only production turbofan engine developed by China. It is only one sample, which is not statistically significant enough to build a track record on. If China had five turbofan engine projects over the past ten years and all of them met delays one way or another, then I would concede on the importance of track record.

slow down, I did not argue if I think that example applies to Chinese Engine industry, but that you can make that argument about something. Whether it applies to Chinese Engine industry is a separate debate and outside the scopes of this thread.

This is something I noticed about you. When debating with people who have different points with you, you have many times taken conversation off track and on to semantics of their argument. Please stop doing it. This is not the debating club.

I don't have the right to mediate...but I feel that you both presents valid points worthy for us to respect.
tphuang's points are sincere and honest and valid with what you point out. I think it's something really deserve respect and attention to. It is indeed true that this is not a debate club, and tphuang you did provide a neutral look to this whole J-20 and I liked that a lot. We all have anticipations and excitements for what might come out, but we should also remind ourselves that we're at most netizens ourselves, and there's no obligations for us to get the rights to know anything. Our frontline journalists are also at the fences waiting at their own expenses in proportions to their daily lives, so we can only be grateful when new stuffs show up; when there isn't, there's got to be a reason why.
Also as regards to Engineer's habit, while I suppose it can be frustrating to some, I also do see the merits somewhere of his habits as him pointing things out can be a good thing for us to learn from too. Of course that's as long as we don't take it personally, although again it's easy to rub people the wrong way. Also, I do feel Engineer pointing out flaws in others' argument, imo, had become quite an iconic thing of Engineer, and even I'd say, as a small part of the culture of our forum. An unique particular feature I'd say. People can come into this forum and expect to be challenged, in a way that can be frustrating, but in fact, informative too. I'd personally like to hear the flaws of my words so I can learn more. But of course again not everyone feels the same way, and thus tphuang you've voiced a legitimate concern and it's perhaps great if perhaps the structural-criticism part this can be toned down a bit.

As for Engineer, I always respected your intellectualism and knowledge of the issues. Your strengths to detect mechanics of others' logic in their arguments are also worthy of mention, and believe it or not, I was inspired enough to start looking more in depths of such things, hoping one day if I come to face you I will be more prepared lol(kidding, but if we do get into debates, I know it's substantive and worthy as I'll be walking away learning a lot). I eventually took a critical thinking course to learn about fallacies. In other words, your contributions are irreplaceable to this forum. In fact, a careful and open-minded forum member can learn a lot from how you pointed things out too. Despite so, tphuang presents a valid point that while I think you pointing things out are invaluable, it can be seen as unfriendly and arrogant gestures to some people unfortunately, or frustrates them. I feel you have the right to express yourself, but the same time I guess reducing the frequencies to only the particular thematic flaws of a person's argument, rather than nitpick every mechanics, can be more effective and helpful. I do feel people can learn from it, and you have the right to express yourself..but of course the same time we're talking about avoiding causing unnecessary conflicts and continuing to facilitate a meaningful discussion where everyone feels comfortable to continuing to share, is perhaps the most important.

Anyways that's just my 2 cents, but once again I'm no one to say what anyone should do. You both are much more respectable fellows than I am, so I'm just really just sharing my thoughts and my appreciations of the opinions you both have.

Thanks

Well spoken Air, and the truth is that iron sharpens iron, and as long as our conversations are honest, intellectually sound, and respectful of the brother gentlemen, there is something to be learned. Sadly we have several forum members who have so little respect for fellow posters, and sometimes so little respect for the truth, that they post deliberate insults, accusations, and outright falsehoods, acting like some crazed reporter writing an expose on gross negligence or malfeasance.

TP has my absolute confidence, his integrity to find that kernel of truth seems to be "who" he is, his honesty and usually good humor and long suffering patience is legendary.
And Eng, well he's the Eng, but he is after the truth, while I would say at times feeling compelled to defend China from her often mis-informed critics, it is personal for him, just as defending my nation is personal for me.
Both of these gentlemen add immensely to the intellect of our forum, and when debating the truth, are passionate, but thoughted men, to that end gentlemen we should all aspire, and Air, your humanity and humility bring honor to your family and friends brother, and you are a true friend.

Now back on topic, we are all frustrated by the lack of meaningfull news or pictures, hopefully we will soon be privileged to be back in the loop, I am still anxiously awaiting 2003?

Brat the humility you described of me pales to who you really are. You and others are lot more worthy to mention. But anyways yea I hope something new comes out soon. I'm still very stoked in wondering what the final production J-20 would be like. And then with that, I'd hope to see some fascinating 1/48 models of the J-20 that I can build. Speaking of which, I think I'm going to add a F-35 to my collection of 1/48 fleets..no matter how much I disliked it. I'm also going to building my Su-35 soon, and revising my F-15C MSIP II. When the Silent Eagle officially rolls out I guess that too..

Yes, modeling is very important, especially the hands on aspect of it, if you watch top gun you will see the instructors using the models to demo the maneuvers, I would like to have a J-20, I think it would give you a more complete sense of the J-20 and its personality. I collect a few older Cox Spitfires, the most beautifull and desirable of all the Cox models, so scarce and pricey on the market, my earliest memories of my Dad are aircraft and flying related, him picking up my toy aircraft and demonstrating a loop or a roll with full sound effects, so yes, I am tickled to see the Chinese designing their very own fifth gen, and I was so impressed with all the video and photos, even the first flight during the Sec Def's visit was ballsy. So I imagine that many Chinese will be inspired to fall in love with flying.

Professor Wang Hua Ming indirectly leaked that J-20, J-15, J-16, and J-31 all use components that are 3D laser printed.

I always wonder what they were talking about in terms of metal 3D printing but after seeing how it's done with a slab of metal it hit me, IT'S NOT 3D PRINTING, IT'S CALLED a 3D MILLING MACHINE.
The technology has been around for decades.

3D printing uses the same technology principle as the inkjet printer. The printer melts the metal and spray at control intervals at various locations, one layer at a time to build the structure

From the link:

Under computer control, the laser melts the titanium alloy powder, then (the printer head) follows the laser in a control manner on the metal structure. Melted titanium alloy powerder will then grow (build) on the structure, one layer at a time. This will allow the printer to build the large and complex metal structure based on the (computer) model, thus reducing/avoiding waste of the source material

I've noticed previously the build quality of the above aircraft seems to look better than that of the J-10A, J-11B. This is also noticeable between the J-15 and Su-33. Maybe they should start building J-10A/J-11Bx parts with the same method.

That's great, but the thing is will it change the chemical composition of the alloy by any means?
