Maya said that WS-15 will start flight testing on J-20 around 2016-2017. Mass production will begin in 2023-2025.

This is why I believe the Su-35 deal, China uses the 117S as the interim engine for J-20 from 2017-2022.

Then use WS-15.

China is already testing J-20 with Al-31, which tells you Al-31 will be the interim engine if WS-15 isn't ready in time.

Then why all the big shimps and other news media are saying that China is buying Su-35 ??

Some of them even say that China is going to buy 100 Su-35. Which I think is utter B.S !

The media is a mess on this. I've decided to just wait to see pictures of Su-35s in a Chinese airfield before making up my mind. I highly doubt it's anything more than noise though. I've even considered the possibility that one or both sides are politically posturing.

That would be disastrous because of low T/W coefficient . AL-31 simply is not fifth generation aircraft engine and J-20 would be underpowered and way below competition .

The 117S is a derivative of the AL-31, so it's far more likely the 117S shares similar dimensions to the AL-31 than the WS-15. The WS-15 itself doesn't need to have the same fitting and connections as the AL-31. The J-20's airframe could just be designed to fit both, or to use custom made removable adapter pieces. After all, these are prototypes. They will probably have to do some redesigning of the fuselage regardless to fit the WS-15 as it is.

Saturn 117S = AL-41F1A is a direct derivative of AL-31 family and has similar dimensions . AL-41 (Saturn 117) is different engine and will power PAK FA in the future . In my opinion, Russia would sell 117S but not 117 to China . There is already precedent - Russia first sold Su-27 and Su-30 and then AL-31 engines for J-11 and J-10 . Similar thing could happen with Su-35 and 117S .

Current prototypes of J-20 use AL-31 so it is reasonable to assume they could use 117S . As for dimension of WS-15 , we don't know that yet , but I would bet they are not much different than above mentioned engines , because I don't think anyone would want to redesign plane completely just to fit another engine .

And what I was pointing out earlier is that it's entirely possible that the prototypes were designed to be compatible with both, so that when they switch engines, no matter how different they are, they won't have to redesign the plane.

The Chinese are backsliding on this one. They have proclaimed awhile back all the fifth gen will use ONLy indigenous engines. So now, they are eating their words and continue to use the Russian ones.

I don't believe in any WS15 and WS10B. The track record for WS10A is Poor (As of 2013, still a lot of issues), No words/progress on WS13 for couple years and therefore No reasons to believe otherwise for the so called upgrades or whatever in the future.
