Accidents are inevitable in military aviation. Frankly it’s impressive the losses aren’t much higher for China compared to the world average.
The J-15 has already been accident-prone though. Flight control problems inherented from the Soviets, plus IIRC the AL-31Fs are more prone to the shaft shattering.

It was free-falling, so I suppose an engine failure? They really should hurry up with the naval WS-10.

Imo it's hard to compare the accident rates of J-15 without knowing how hard they're flown (especially in context of early production batches and when training initial batches of pilots).

Event per flight hour would be a better measure if we had it, rather than per airframe type

J-15 again? It is likely that the AL-31F is the problem again. PLAN needs to speed up the transition to J-15T
